What instances can you think of where an actor playing the son, was in fact older than the actor playing the father?

I mean in cases where no special make up was used.

Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang springs to mind. Lionel Jeffries is a couple of years younger than Dick Van Dyke - he had large mutton-chop side-burns in the film but no other 'ageing' devices.

    regards

    Dave

This is close! Joan Sims plays Patsy Rowlands' mum in Carry On Behind. There wasn't a year between them - although Patsy was the younger.

I believe Phyllis Calvert and Patricia Roc were almost exactly the same age. Phyllis played Pat's mother in "Madonna of the Seven Moons"!

Ernest Borgnine (born 1917) played the father of Kirk Douglas' (born 1916) in The Vikings. He was also only a few years older than Tony Curtis (born 1925) who played his other son.

    Ten years only between them.

Only 7 years between father Sean Connery and son Dustin Hoffman in Family Business.

Of Golden Girls Bea Arthur, Betty White and Rue McClanahan, only Rue was actually younger than Estelle Getty! Bea and Betty were both a year older.

And of the four, only Betty is still with us.

Since mothers-in-law are not blood relatives... It depends on the age of the daughter in this case.

Plenty of real life examples of this sort! Ask Bill Wyman - he not only had a younger by years mum-in-law but she was engaged to his son who was 12 years older than his stepmother!

I have an uncle who's the same age as me, and is younger than my older sister.
My Welsh granddad had a late arrival in his family
