Dear fellow Movie addicts,

I know that amongst you there are some very knowledgeable people who seem to know everything there is to know about old British movies.

I have a little challenge for you all...

I am trying to identify some old movie photos that belonged to my Dad (Syd Pearson) and I have scanned and uploaded them onto the web for you to see and hopefully help identify. Ideally, I would like to know the following for each picture where possible:

    - Actor / Actress' name

    - Name of Movie

    - Location

Each photo has been given a number and thay are available to see at:

    http://www.ofoto.co.uk/BrowsePhotos.jsp?&c...=1&sort_order=0

If there are any pictures that prove too tricky or need some additional pictures to help identify, please let me know and I will see if I have any others that appear to be similar.

Sincerely hope you are all able to help as I am planning to add these to a 'Syd Pearson' Web Site along with the many many others that I have identified.

I would also like to say a big 'thankyou' to BritMovie member 'JIM' from Leicester for spending more than 2 hours the other evening helping me identify all the others! Thanks JIM - you were a huge help!

    Hope you can help!

    Regards,

    Jon.

It was a pleasure Jon, and a little trip to the past. I felt I should have identified more, but that's memory for you!

Number 3 - That camera the man on the right is using looks post 1918 by quite a long way which implies it is a "relaxing on the set" shot rather than a scene from the film (whichever film it is)

Have you figured out any of the codes on the photos yet? Where they are given they are painted by hand on the negative so that they appear in white on the print, usually in the lower right (or left) corner. They are a code for the film, then a dash, then a code for that still. Either code can include letters or numbers. But once you know the code for a film you can identify any still from that film.

    e.g.

"103(IP) = A Matter of Life and Death

    "114(IP) = Black Narcissus

I suspect the letter in brackets might refer to the stills photographer.

I have some notes for people who are collecting stills on the P&P web site

Without seeing a number it's hard to be sure, but the plane in #25 is a BOAC Stratocruiser so Out of the Clouds springs to mind.

Is that Anthony Asquith on the left in #31?

In 33 I think that's Charles Crichton holding his hand out.

I think 31 and 33 are on location for HIS EXCELLENCY (1951) starring Eric Portman who appears in both stills. The film was set in a "Mediterranean colony" but I do not know where it was filmed.

I would guess that the train stuff is from THE TITFIELD THUNDERBOLT - the fact that the train is not on tracks in one still is the give-away.

Can't be sure but feel quite confident.

    Hello John,

Some wonderful stills. I agree that 31 and 33 feature Eric Portman they only other two I can add light on(hopefully) is 23 the soldier is the actor who played in the cockleshell heroes and then was often with Spike Milligan where that was his catchphrase.

Then in 7 is the chap in the background wearing the white shirt collar and pullover Michael Redgrave. Hope this small offering is a step nearer satisfaction

    Hello again Jon

Via IMDb the actor's name on23 is David Lodge, he was also the bandmaster in the Railway Children.

    regards

I don't think No 23 is David Lodge. Very similar, but I think not.

I'm also fairly sure that's not David Lodge.

And why do you think that the man in #7 is Michael Redgrave? I would have said that's a member of the crew working on building a set.

    Hello Rennie and Steve,

Looks like I've been shot down on both counts, going to the opticians tomorrow.

Mr J Pearson. I am not familiar with Syd Pearson, but am assuming, from IMDb, that he was the special effects man on films such as 'The Ladykillers'. If so, presumably many, if not all of these stills could be taken from films he worked on. If so, could not No's 9& 10 be taken from 'Scott of the Antarctic?

No, wrong clothing. He's just wearing a wrap-around coat whilst Mills & Co were kitted out in proper hooded protective clothing.

Picture 28 looks like a scene from "THE BLUE MAX" 1966 which I think was shot in Irland.

I think #16 could be Prudence Hyman being made up as Medusa for "The Gorgon" (1963) shot at Bray Studios.

I agree with Freddy om #23 that it is David Lodge, and that it could be from "I Only Arsked" (1959) shot at Bray Studios.

But David Lodge played a Sergeant (Sgt Potty Chambers) in I Only Arsked. The man with his trousers on fire doesn't have sergeant's stripes on his arm.
