Can anyone tell me what some of the characters were sniffing up their noses? It seemed to be socially acceptable and done by men and women. This is in reference to the 1948 Oliver Twist by David Lean.

    Please respond ASAP

Snuff - finely chopped tobacco, sometimes scented or flavoured.

I believe theres still a black market in 'snuff' movies today.

I've never tried snuff but i must admit that i once foolishly tried sniffing coke.

I could never get used to all those bubbles up my nose.

    That's e'snuff' from me.

Snuff was very popular in mining areas as colliers were not allowed to smoke underground. Chewing Tobacco was also popular but had the drawback of having to be spit out.
