Does anyone know if there is a website or other source of a complete list of the postcards issued in the various Picturegoer series?

They did a lot of them, and it was a fortnightly magazine that ran for many years. I've seen quite a few offered for sale over the years. I have even bought a few of them.

Picturegoer was a weekly magazine which as far as I know did not issue any postcards.

I believe you are thinking of Picture Show magazine which was also weekly and had a 'postcard' picture of a star in every issue. But these were not separate postcards, they were postcard sized photographs intended to be cut out and pasted on a blank postcard by the reader.

I have a complete listing of all the Picturegoer postcards in all series throughout the entire production run. I bought this from a private collector who assembled the information in the early 1990s. The contact information (July 1996) was:

    Geoff Walker tel: 01701 321720

I also have a postal address but will not post this in an open forum. I'll pass it on in a private message if you want it.

If you want to ask about about any cards, or whether there are cards of any particular perofmers etc, I will look them up. Although this listing was produced before the advent of PCs there is a full index of all featured stars together with the relevant card numbers. Its proven to be an invaluable resource over the years.

    Best wishes

I have a Picturegoer Post Card that I bought for £5 off an eBay seller in Scotland nearly three years ago. It is a beautiful studio portrait of child actor Jon Whiteley...judging by his appearence on the photo, I would date it to around 1954 / 1955, when he was nine or ten years of age. On the front on the card, it says, underneath the photo, D.914, then JON WHITELEY, then J. ARTHUR RANK ORGANISATION and on the back, it says: THE PICTUREGOER SERIES, 128, LONG ACRE, LONDON, WC2. NO. D 914.

Incredibly, these beautifu, glossy, black and white studio portraits were only 6d each (2 pence in today's currency) and were post free. As to the actual date of issue of the one I have mentioned above, according to a Picturegoer magazine I have in my collection dated March 30th, 1957, the four new Post Cards that week were: Carroll Baker; Jon Whiteley; Doris Day and Keith Michell. So this is possibly when the one I have of Jon Whiteley was made available to Picturegoer readers.

Sorry that my scanner isn't attached to this Laptop I access the Internet with, or I would scan the Post Card and upload it here.

You are obviously too young to have written to Picturegoer Salon, Long Acre.

They did indeed sell postcards, and I have every sepia photo of Barbara Stanwyck, from 1929 to 1950. They also issued a larger black and white photo for 1/6 pence.

You are right about Picture Show and the photo's that you could cut out and stick on a postcard, but they for those who possible couldn't afford the glossy postcards from Picturegoer.

Sorry, emcue43, I don't have such a list. I only have the Jon Whiteley Post Card mentioned above. Perhaps someone else on here can help.

They were certainly beautiful, but they were sephia, not black and white.

You're half right, Ray (regarding the late 1950's cards, at least). I've just taken a look at my Jon Whiteley card and it is very slightly tinted in sepia, but not heavily so like those from the 1930's. In fact, until you look at it closely, at first glance it would appear to be monochome.

That is interesting, I didn't realise they had changed the format, my last postcards of Susan Hayward bought in 1956 were definitely still sephia.

I have an Album (My Film Favourites) with 117 of these postcards in - about 70 black and white, the rest coloured - no sepia. Any ideas on where to sell these?

eBay is a good place to sell them, stanwood. Meanwhile, here below is my Picturegoer postcard of Jon Whiteley. I'd now say that this portrait was taken in 1956, when he was eleven, as he appears to be wearing the same shirt as he did in The Spanish Gardener. My scanner has cropped off the left hand white margin of the Post Card. It's still there on the original.
