I have to ask this question here because I had such good luck the last time this sort of question came up. was watching, "Trapeze," the other night when I hit upon this. and I can't reference this any better because I don't have the original soundtrack, otherwise...

in the scene where Gina Lollogrigida is, "pitching," Burt Lancaster to join his trapeze act w/Tony Curtis, there's a trumpet piece quite audible in the background, that, "accentuates," the entire scene.

was this on the original soundtrack? or was this a source piece that Sir Malcom Arnold borrowed.

I should say here, albeit rather belatedly how unhappy I was to learn of Sir Malcom's passing. I had read that he hadn't been at all well for some time. suffice it to say, his music will be w/me always.

anyway, can anybody shed any light on this for me?

as I mentioned earlier, the soundtrack exists, I suppose, but certainly seems unobtainable as are a lot of Sir Malcolm's work. Chandos offerred a suite of tunes from the score, but obviously didn't include the piece I'm asking about. TIA, regards to all...

Sorry donauwaelzer, am unable to help though your question did bring to mind that line from Cheers.

    (from memory)

Cliff: "I remember when I saw Trapeze with Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis."

Coach: "No kidding, did you get to sit between them."

IMO Nicholas Colasanto who played Coach was one of the best comic actors.

    regards

I don't know this film either, but my memory tells me that Arnold used to be an orchestral trumpet-player before he became known as a composer so it wouldn't be at all unlikely that he wrote an effective solo for his own instrument as part of the score rather than borrowing a piece by someone else.

I'm currently reading an excellent biography of Burt Lancaster and it mentions that Burt wanted to do for the circus with Trapeze, what Michael Powell had done for ballet, in The Red Shoes........

I vaguely recall watching Trapeze many moons ago, probably on a black and white TV. Anyhow, reading the biography it says that Lancaster specifically employed Carol Reed and Robert Trasker because of their work on The Third Man.......... but Trapeze was a colour movie.............. I have realised, from imdb ...........

Just when I thought I was confused enough, I then noticed that Sid James was in the movie as a snake charmer......... .......

I really must make a point to watch Trapeze (1956) again sometime and try and figure out how all this fits together in the results.........

Great film....great music, its all the more authentic as it was filmed in Paris at the famous Cirque d'Hiver where you can still go and watch trapeze acts, the building and area are virtually unchanged. Lancaster called upon his previous career as a circus acrobat and performed all his own stunts on screen. As for the trumpet solo,I had always assumed it was by Malcolm Arnold, the soundtrack is available on CD/vinyl from Amazon for $10
