I'm doing my final year dissertation on The Full Monty in terms of critical response. Any thoughts on the film? The actors? the use of British politics or a national identity? The role of men within the film? Any response would be excellent!

It's a charming and funny film but very implausible. Would ex-steel workers turn to petty crime (it does start with RC up to a bit of thieving) or the Chippendales for inspiration if they were hard-up in the real world?

I'm not sure the writer was trying to make a political statement about the decline of heavy industry (Brassed Off maybe was) in the North - I suspect Simon Beaufoy just needed a device to make/force masculine men get involved in a bit of gender reversal. The film does of course show that men, like women, must try to aim for an image of body perfection that is out of reach to many - certainly Mark Addy's character who possesses a degree of self-loathing because of his build and unhappiness with it.
