can anyone tell me the reason so many english men wear pinky rings? i am very interested in the one nigel havers wears in the show manchild, would love to get one myself. if anyone knows the exact kind he wears i would really appreciate it. being from the states the only people here who wear them are mostly gangster types but in england, they wear them with so much style and grace.

Actor John Carlisle always wears one and so does singer, James Blunt. Prince Charles wears one..........

    I WEAR ONE!

I think that a lot of aristocrats wear them - possibly with family crests on them.

According to Wikipedia, signet rings are often worn on the little finger by both men and women and 'pinky' rings often by men who have no intention of marrying or are homosexual.

In England we do everything with style and grace

    It's not a fashion I've even noticed.

Lionel Atwill used to be known to his friends as Pinky because his hair was a lightish red colour and looked pink.

I think its a toff thing, the pinky ring I mean. I have seen lots of older gents wearing them and they are uaually quite posh, the ring is always gold and often with an oval black onyx..... maybe it denotes being a member of society like the "Free Masons" or "Round Table". In days of old titled gents would wear a pinky ring that had their seal or stamp on it for their letters and documents.

I wear one when I'm suited and booted but not on a daily basis. Was my grandad's and he was a Deptford docker!

I'd like to ask Jonbert a similar question concerning the massive chunky rings worn by many American men on their right hand finger next to their pinky. Paul Newman wears one as did Steve McQueen as does Neil Armstrong. They seem to be a similar design, any ideas?

What I actually quoted from Wikipedia was:

often by men who have no intention of marrying or are homosexual

But the emphasis was on often, meaning some, not all people wearing such rings are gay. It doesn't mean that all men who wear such rings are gay.

All poodles are dogs but not all dogs are poodles

I didn't point out that a number of gay men have married and have fathered children
