Brassed Off wasn't actually about the 1984/85 strike - it was about the later pit closures. There's the Comic Strip's The Strike and an episode of Our Friends in the North was about it, I think.
The first one I can remember was Brassed Off in 1996 followed by Bily Elliott in 2000. Surely there must have been some in the 1980s?

"The Strike" was pretty good with Al Pacino as Arthur Scargill and Meryl Streep as his wife.![]()
Mounted police charging miners on picket lines, this was Thatchers Britain. I wept as I watched it on the news and it still upsets me today.
The battle of Orgreave will be on Thatchers conscience for ever.

What makes you think Thatcher has got a conscience? As someone who was there that day and was lucky enough to come away with just a few bruises, I can tell you the news didn't show half of what went on.
Anyway, back to the subject, there was a play shown on TV about the strike but I can't remember any details or when it was shown other than that it was before 1991. I can remember a scene in the WMC where the members were talking about coal versus nuclear power but nothing else comes to mind. Maybe someone out there knows more.
Amber Films have the Coalfield Trilogy:
The Scar (1997) - Plot summary
Like Father (2001)
Shooting Magpies (2005)

If anyone is interested i have a short news reel film about the miners srike taken outside yorkshire main colliery. you can find it on my mining web site at
YORKSHIRE MAIN COLLIERY | AND OTHER LOCAL MINES
union/ strike page.
There's also a tedious art film called Roccinate starring John Hurt which I had the misfortune to see at the London Film Festival one year. It features Hurt wondering across various deserted country cottages whilst the miner's strike is alluded to in the background. I think the point of the film is the old cliche that we don't have a "green and pleasant land" any more.
After the screening various members of the audience gave the director some stick about how obscure it was and that miners wouldn't understand it - a bit patronising I thought since they wouldn't be the only ones !!
Miss Rhymney Valley (1985) directed by Karl Francis.
The Big Man references it too, but not very effectively.
Hello all, The Miners Strike is close to my heart but I don't know where I can buy the films from, any ideas please
Hi Teamfatboy
I have a lot of this stuff on tape, my brother is transfering it to dvd for me.
PM me if you would like copies.
Something a bit different.......The Daughter in Law was a BBC Pebble Mill adaptation of the book, but based on the 1912 Miners strike....

Hi All
Apologies I only have documentary films and news clips from the miners strike 84,
not the films mentioned in this tread.

This cropped up in a Dalziel and Pascoe episode a while ago but was mainly about the after effects of the strike and the way it divided communities.
There is an open day at the Pleasley colliery here in derbys and last year there was a stall with a lot of info on it. Will look for the web link, its the friends of Pleasley pit so they might mention the group who ran it.
There is still a divide in Notts which led to a murder a couple of years ago and that was through a rift between neighbours going back to the strike.
Didn't experience it first hand but have spoken to a lot of those involved from both sides since.
Also about the 1926 general strike with my late grandad.

I think that was called Scab and also think it was made shortly after the strike ended, although I can't find any details about it.
One scene I can recall though is when a coach load of miner's are leaving the picket line and the police get on looking for a certain individual and another miner stands up and say's "I am Spartacus" and the rest of the coach joins in.
that sounds like miners humour sure enough
