Can you help please. I'm a school teacher and in November have to teach a lesson based on 'the world of work' in 1958 (our school is celebrating its 50th anniversary).

What film from this year (or plus or minus 5 years) have good 5/10/15 minute segments that show 'life at work'.

Clips that also reflect the cost of living then/the use of pounds shillings and pence would also be great.

Maybe somebody on here has some 'propaganda' type films I could use as well as/ instead of feature films.

    Thanks in advance

It's 1949, and may be tricky to find, but how about A Run for Your Money (1949) .... it's a comedy about Welsh Miners (initially seen at pit) winning a prize and going to London for a rugby match....IIRC, there is a great deal of obsessing about money....

Chance of a Lifetime may also be slightly too early but it's set in a small plough factory and also has lots about the appalling food in the canteen, the white collar staff eating at their desks, what the hours are (8.00am - 5.30pm with no paid holiday and unpaid overtime if the workers want the staffrooms recdecorated) and lots more fascinating details.

One film released in 1958 that might be relevant is Look Back in Anger - the anti-hero runs a sweet-stall so I assume there must be prices mentioned.

The first 10 minutes or so of Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1960) show Arthur Seaton at work in the bicycle factory and we can hear his thoughts on the work and his life.

2 good examples for me of work and life/ pounds shilling and pence would be:

    Love on the Dole

About a family who refuse to have anything on credit

    The Stars Look Down

About a miners son aspiring to train as a teacher and getting married to a woman who wants everything on the "never never" and has an affair with the tally man.

I haven't seen it for a while but 'Trouble in store' shows a workplace, Megs Jenkins character works in the stockroom and is chuffed when asked to help out with the sales, Moira Lister is a snooty and ultimately crooked secretary, there's a scene where a Typewriter is thrown out of a window too as I recall!
