Does anyone happen to know what the proposed 3rd Dr Who film was? I had met Peter Cushing many years ago and we talked about the two Dr Who films and he mentioned that he was approached to do a 3rd film that was never done...

It was supposed to be based on the 1965 BBC Doctor Who adventure entitled The Chase.

The failure of the earlier Doctor Who films at the US box office has been offered as a reason for the project not taking off.

Saw the original two films on a double bill back in the sixties - thought they were great fun.

    Oi - That's my avatar!

I've seen three separate possibilities for a third Dr Who film. One was, as Wearysloth says, The Chase - which was the third Dalek serial and, as the good Doctor was not mentioned in the title of the second film (Daleks - Invasion Earth 2150AD) that seems to be likely.

However, I also seem to remember reading that an adaptation of The Keys of Marinus was considered - basically each episode was a separate adventure in a different part of the planet Marinus as our heroes hunted out computer components. The result would have been similar in some ways to Amicus's anthology films. This would have required quite a few different sets and might have been too expensive - I can't remember where I read this.

The other possibility - I think this was in a Doctor Who Magazine article years ago - was Doctor Who and the Dinosaurs (or some lost world or equivalent - NOT based on a TV original). Again, this seems unlikely - unless this was an attempt to cash in on 1 Million BC. As the DWM article pointed out, given the similarity in Cushing's performances, At The Earth's Core shows how this might have turned out.

Despite the attractiveness of the other possibilities, my own suspicion is that The Chase was the most likely candidate, with the others, if they were ever seriously considered, were ways to crack the US market - especially the dinosaur possibility.

wearysloth and Dr Amicus , Thank you both for the information , any one of these possibilities would have made a great film. I always enjoyed the film versions of Dr Who and thought they were great fun and remember Peter Cushing saying he liked the films as well and was sorry another was not done.

I don't know if it was just a joke/rumour but many years ago I remember there was talk of a big screen adventure called "Doctor Who Meets Scratchman". It was to have featured the then current Doctor (Tom Baker) with Vincent Price taking the lead villain role. Could have been tremendous but never got off the drawing board unfortunately.

Yet another rumour/suggestion about a third film: Milton Subotsky gave an interview where he said he still had the rights to do a third film (?!) and fancied having two Doctors in it: Peter Cushing and Tom Baker . . .

I think the Tom Baker/Vincent Price film was developed for some time with James Hill to direct and the script was by Baker and Ian Marter.

I've heard (via Doctor Who Magazine and the extras features on the DVD's) that a third movie never got off the ground due to the fact the second film didn't do so well at the box office. (Although both films regularly got shown back to back throughout the 1970's at my local cinema. So with that and the Video and DVD releases, I'd say those 2 films have paid for themselves over and over)

Many believe that Dalekmania had run it's course by 1966. But I've also heard that a 'Keys Of Marinus' film was suggested.

I've also heard that little Susan (Roberta Tovey) in the films got told that Peter Cushing would only do a second Dalek film as long as Roberta was in it. That really pleased Roberta no end.

Doctor Who Magazine also did a big feature on the Tom Baker/4th Doctor 'Scratchman' film and I believe Scratchman was supposed to be the Devil?

That was released on VHS (most of the money went to charity) and is crying out for a DVD release.

No idea who "Babelcolour" is, but this as yet incomplete labour of love is a little masterpiece worthy of a proper screening:

Bebelcolour are a group of Dr Who fans who have far too much time on their hands and enjoy colourising a few seconds of classic Dr Who episodes.

Some of the results are quite good, but I don't see the need to colourise what was originally filmed in black & white when there's so much from the Jon Pertwee era that needs to be restored to it's original colour.

In Tom Baker's excellent autobiography he writes that he and Ian Marter, who played companion Harry Sullivan, came up with the idea and had completed a script but the interest in the project from the powers that be fell away. It was to be about scarecrows that came to life, terrorising the locals.

I thought it was considerably better than 'Quite good...'
