Surely the most famous scene where someone's watching another film is 'Sunset Boulevard', where Gloria Swanson watches her much younger self. The film in question was the apparently unfinished 'Queen Kelly', directed by Erich Von Stroheim ... who played the butler in 'Sunset Boulevard'.

Gene Hackman fell asleep after witnessing a murder in 'The Conversation' and woke up to the noise of 'The Flintstones', I remember. Jack Lemmon was ABOUT to watch a famous film in 'The Apartment' but was put off by the sponsored ads delaying the start. I think 'We're In The Money' from 'The Gold Diggers Of 1933' appeared in something. Was it 'Bonnie And Clyde'?

A funny example was in 'McVicar' when the hardened criminals were treated to an Anna Neagle-Michael Wilding movie (I think called 'Having A wonderful Time')! Roger Daltrey and Co. started simulating gay sex while the stars danced on screen to the quaint title tune.

James Woods in the Stephen King film "Cats Eyes" watches Herbert Lom in another Stephen King film "The Dead Zone". Also Stephen King, "The Shining" is showing at the drive in cinema in "Twister"

I remember a scene in "Hand in Hand" featuring Miriam Karlin, when there was a TV on in the background which featured a film I recognised. But for the life of me, now I can't remember what the background film was...........Anyone out there.........there's a challenge.

In Wish You Were Here (1987), they go and see Love Story (1944) at the cinema.

In Brief Encounter, is the film they go to see a real one? I've always wondered!

I assume it was made specially. The actors are Mimo Dauro and Joy Millan apparently. Some enterprising director has made a short called Flames of Passion as a riff on Brief Encounter.

In the excellent stage version by Kneehigh, Alec and Laura go to see a comedy which is a sort of parody of an Aldwych farce and which the audience get to sing along with. And if you sit in the front row like what I did, you had a good chance of sitting next to Alec!

That was a fab show, such a shame it's now gone from the WE.

Or come to think of it, maybe "Hand in Hand" was the background film in a completely different movie.

In Home Alone doesn't Macaulay Culkin use the soundtrack of some film to try and persuade the burglars the house is occupied?

name='philip hindley']Can anyone name any films or TV shows where someone is watching telly in a scene or whatever, and it features an actual scene from a genuine film. I have a few which I have spotted over the years. Eg; Dalziel and Pascoe scene from THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES (RATHBONE VERSION) another eps featured THE NANNY on tv screen, MIdsomer Murders featured scene from TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA ,Remington Steele featured A CHALLENGE FOR ROBIN HOOD, WHAT A CRAZY WORLD featured THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, Weird Science featured FRANKENSTEIN 1931(Colorized clip) The most recent Teeth, (awful film) featured someone watching THE GORGON on TV. Hancocks Half-Hour eps THE HORROR SERIAL springs to mind in which Tony is watching the last eps of BBCs TV QUATERMASS AND THE PIT , I never saw this, but I believe a clip was used or justsoundfx were used. Good hunting bet you are all scratching your heads now! I hope.

Another one is a TV play from 1979 VAMPIRES a couple of kids are watching Christopher Lee in I think Taste the Blood or Scars of Dracula.

Here I am again I found another one which was in DOCTORS EPS ROLEPLAY.. on Tuesday. The young tearaway girl was watching the opening titles of the Hitchcock film SUSPICION on the TV, and it was the colorised version. Heres another glaring one I never mentioned sometime back. Spielbergs tv episode AMAZING STORIES ..WELCOME TO MY NIGHTMARE a tribute to PSYCHO there are several scenes included from the film!

The film begins with 'Eddie' (Emile Charles) and his mam at home in Liverpool, watching BRIEF ENCOUNTER.

They then watch NIAGARA (1953), but are interrupted by arrival of Eddie's dad making homophobic remarks and striking him across the face.

Eddie runs away from home, joining his friend Michael (Tony Forsyth).

I'm pretty sure that in Caprice (1967) Doris Day goes into a cinema that is showing the start of the actual film.

    Which is quite surreal.

In Aliens Vs Predator (AVP) at the beginning a guy in the monitoring station is watching TV. It goes by quick but I am pretty sure it's the Universal film Frankenstein Meets The Wolfman.
