Scratching away, but I can tell you that in the Hancock's Half Hour episode you mention, it was just sound effects.
Can anyone name any films or TV shows where someone is watching telly in a scene or whatever, and it features an actual scene from a genuine film. I have a few which I have spotted over the years. Eg; Dalziel and Pascoe scene from THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES (RATHBONE VERSION) another eps featured THE NANNY on tv screen, MIdsomer Murders featured scene from TASTE THE BLOOD OF DRACULA ,Remington Steele featured A CHALLENGE FOR ROBIN HOOD, WHAT A CRAZY WORLD featured THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN, Weird Science featured FRANKENSTEIN 1931(Colorized clip) The most recent Teeth, (awful film) featured someone watching THE GORGON on TV. Hancocks Half-Hour eps THE HORROR SERIAL springs to mind in which Tony is watching the last eps of BBCs TV QUATERMASS AND THE PIT , I never saw this, but I believe a clip was used or justsoundfx were used. Good hunting bet you are all scratching your heads now! Ihope.

Steven Spileberg often does this. I think he has "Harvey" in Close Encounters, and in "Poltergeist" which he produced (and some say directed), there is a scene with "My name is Joe" with Spencer Tracey.
Speilberg even re-made that film himself as "Always".
Good thread though. Got me thinking.

The Thing in the original Halloween.
I think that the cinema from In a Land of Plenty showed the Thief of Bagdad to an audience of enthralled kids. It's quite rare on tv though - soap characters invariably watch either wildlife programmes or the end of the news.
"It's A Wonderful Life" in Gremlins. "Top Hat" in The Purple Rose of Cairo
I suppose the most famous film within a British film is probably the Disney cartoon at the end of Sabotage
name='thatllbetheday']"It's A Wonderful Life" in Gremlins. "Top Hat" in The Purple Rose of Cairo
"Top Hat" also features in "The Green Mile".
And another Spielberg one I just recalled is "Dumbo" in "1941".
Seems that the UK occurences are quite rare.
I'll put me anorak on and have a fink.
In Helter Skelter, Jimmy Edwards shows a patient a Walter Forde silent comedy - quite a chunk of it - called Would You Believe It? - and it's the best bit of the film.
Also, and even sadder, in the 1934 film My Old Dutch, Betty Balfour and Gordon Harker go to the pictures, and this being 1915 London, see the 1915 version of My Old Dutch - again, decent chunks of it - starring the legendary Albert Chevalier, Henry Edwards and Florence Turner....nicely presented, and obviously from a decent print. Which is the tragedy - all that survives of the 1915 version is what we see in the 1934 version; whether the filmmakers chucked out what they didn't use, or whether they preserved footage that otherwise would have been entirely lost, is a matter for debate....

Probably not an exhaustive list, but it'll give you a few good ideas

Hi.
Some Popeye cartoons have incorporated some extracts from previous Popeye adventures ie. I'M IN THE ARMY NOW and POPEYE'S TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY.
One episode of Eastenders which featured a clip from a film with Duncan Lamont and possibly Yvonne Mitchell.
Possibly THE TITFIELD THUNDERBOLT.
Definately the 1990's specially made for television film DDOCTOR WHO. An employee at in the hospital morgue is watching an extract from the Colin Clive/Boris Karloff version version of FRANKENSTEIN.
A Sylvester McCoy episode in which a voice over a BBC television insignia announces the start of a new science fiction series but cuts off before giving the title of DOCTOR WHO.
The Beatles in an extract from TOP OF THE POPS also in a William Hartnell era episode of DOCTOR WHO.
As a child I saw a film which featured a vital clue to a mystery involving a player piano roll. Somewhere there is an extract from an old silent film with Lon Chaney in THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.
That is for starters. Probably think of some more later.

I remember George Segal and Glenda Jackson crying their eyes out whilst watching "Brief Encounter". The film was "A touch of class" from 1973.
"All men are fools. And what makes them so is having beauty like what I have got..."

Wall-E features clips from Hello Dolly at regular intervals, particularly a sequence featuring a song-and-dance routine with a young Michael Crawford. But Ultra-obscurely, it also, apparently, features a still from DW Griffiths' 1909 A Corner In Wheat......
- All About Eve - in Pedro Almodovar's " Todo Sobre Mi Madre"/ "Tout Sur Ma Mère"/ "All About My Mother" (in english), great film, better than Douglas Sirk .....
