Dremble,
I haven't seen Jeremy Northam's Dean Spanley yet, but with your recommendation, I will.
Barbara
name='torinfan']She was delightful as Jackie Kennedy in a bio on Aristotle Onassis. I remember her from Dune, too.
Yes Francesca Annis is a really gorgeous and regal woman. She also made a splash in the older woman-younger man films RECKLESS, 1 and 2, 1997-98, with Robson Green, good movies and perhaps hyped a bit by her then real-life relationship with younger man Ralph Fiennes.
All the best,
Barbara

name='Nick Dando']And Toby Stephens.
Hi Nick,
Much enjoy Sam West and Toby Stephens, both of famous theatre parents, and both talented in an intense cerebral way. It's been a while, but I thought Toby Stephens especially memorable in PHOTOGRAPHING FAIRIES (1997) and Sam West as the evil-hearted Mr. Eliot in a favourite version of PERSUASION (1995). Unfortunately, I never caught any of his productions when he was artistic director of the Sheffield Theatre, but he must be highly thought of if he took over from Michael Grandage.
All the best,
Barbara
name='daveyboy1984']Hi guys, I would really like to hear if you have any reccomendations of really good male english actors in their lates 30s, 40s and early 50s who are worth checking out onscreen.
Reason being is that Im hoping to make a short film with a lead character who's that sort of age and want to be familar with as many people's work as possible. The less famous the better - as there might be a chance they would be interested in being in the film!
Thanks a lot for all your help.
Dave
If you were to broaden your scope to include British actors rather than just English then I would say there are quite a few Scots, Welsh and Irish actors out there worth looking at and many are based in London. Well known established faces have been known to appear in small budget short films if the idea is good and you pitch it well, why not aim for the top, you have nothing to lose! Doug Ray Scott and Robert Carlyle spring to mind as powerful actors from North of the border.....![]()
So many great actors mentioned here. However, one I would like to mention is David Threlfall. His range is enormous, I have seen him play, amongst others a serial killer, a sleazy fish and chip shop owner, The Count of Monte Cristo, Prince Philip and of course his current TV role in Shameless. In every single part I have seen him play, he was so good, so totally convincing and so brilliant. For me he is one of today's great actors. I know he misses the 40's bracket by 5 years, but he deserves a mention.

Oh yes - he's terrific.
Loved him in Conspiracy.![]()
That's interesting. Never thought of him. Wondering if people would just think of Shameless when they watched him.
It doesn't have to be English. I not entirely sure why I put that down!
Robert Carlyle is a good reccommendation.

He played Archer in the original TV version of Scum.
He played Titmuss in the TV series Paradise Postponed (1986)
And reprised the role as the star of Titmuss Regained (1991)
He played Bell in the surreal series Nightingales (1990)
He's always well worth watching
Steve
If you can take a look at episode 2 season 2 of Afterlife. Threlfall plays a murderer called Ian Garland and has a scene with Lesley Sharp's character Alison Monday set in a prison visiting room. It is truly scary and for me was one of the best bits of tv acting of the year. Well worth watching.
