As mentioned elsewhere the in-laws are from the USA and have come to expect themed film evenings when on holiday. This year our location is Dorset.

So, any suggestions for Dorset themed films or TV programmes (drama or documentary) to appeal (that we can get hold of).

    My starters would be;

    Moonfleet,

    Nuts in May,

    French Lieutenant's Woman

all the Hardy adaptations (I preferred the Mayor of Casterbridge with Bates & Stallybrass moi-meme),

the greatest haircuts of Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall

Were there any detective stories filmed there (Rockliffe's Babies ?)

Your expert views welcomed. Many Thanks.

Powell and Pressburger's The Small Back Room (1949) starring David Farrar and Kathleen Byron finishes up with a very tense bomb disposal scene on Chesil Beach. For the most part it's a "Brit Noir" set during WWII

Available on a Criterion DVD with a very good commentary track

    Also ...

Far from the Madding Crowd (1967) with Julie Christie & Terence Stamp

Lots of Dorset action there in Thomas Hardy's "Wessex"

    Full Metal Jacket (1987)

Most of the "Vietnamese countryside" scenes are actually filmed in Dorset. But it's not obvious

    The Guinea Pig (1948)

With Richard Attenborough as the working class boy given an academic scholarship to a public shool. Filmed at Sherborne School in Dorset

Moonfleet (1955), with Stewart Granger; Jon Whiteley; George Sanders and Joan Greenwood, was set in Dorset, but was filmed entirely in California and the cliffs and beach scenes looked nothing like those in the real Dorset.

Another of Thomas Hardy's novels set in Dorset....."Tess"

Superb film.....but was filmed in France, because director Roman Polanski faced extradition to USA if found in UK

The Dam Busters, the bomb testing scenes were shot around Portland and Weymouth. And for that commercial break, go for the Hovis ad, that was filmed at Gold Hill, Shaftsbury.

Comrades (1986) about the Tolpuddle martyrs, partly filmed in Dorset as well as Australia.

Brandy For The Parson (1952), filmed in Devon and Dorset.

Rough Shoot (1953), starring Joel McCrea and Herbert Lom, made on location in Dorset. Not sure if this is commercially available, though.

I'm fairly sure that in the book they go North.

Any version of Persuasion will have some key Lyme Regis scenes.

Railway Children was Keithley & Worth Valley in Yorkshire, not Dorset. They are actually quite proud of it....

I am sure I have seen Dorchester in a film....

The scenes where Gibson and Wallace watch the bombs being tested were filmed at Gibralter Point near Skegness in Lincolnshire.

Moonfleet (1955) was set on the Dorset coast, but was filmed almost entirely in Hollywood, with the exception of the cliffs and beach scenes, which were filmed on the Californian coast.
