as from next month the town of borehamwood will have completed phase one of the permanent public celebration of it's film and tv making past which goes back to 1914.
at the railway stn, which has a 2 million footfall each year, there will be a giant metal wall relief of a film crew at work, 11 pavement stars celebrating well known names from the past, banners, film motifs on the bus shelters and ticket hall and heritage boards. barbara windsor will unveil the board celebrating her career with liz fraser and burt kwouk unveiling the star honouring peter sellers.
the high street will also have banners with famous film images from star wars to the dambusters plus a series of plaques celebrating famous names who have worked here. a film heritage trail will be launched and expanded in phase 2. the long term is for a visitors centre at elstree studio.
this accompanies an ongoing project where we are interviewing film veterans on camera and hope to start a series of 'an evening with' talks with well known names. we also encourage visits from fan groups and have 100 on the buses fans coming in june and avengers fans in july. a free a to z guide to film and tv locations in herts is also soon to be printed. it's only a start but we feel long overdue. paul welsh, elstree studios historian and chair of elstree screen heritage
