IIRC Kenneth Williams claimed he got £4000 for the first one and £7000 for his last, and no percentages etc. Four grand in 1958 wasn't too bad, but seven grand in 1978 wasn't great for a leading role in a hit movie. I wonder how much Rogers and Thomas made out of them.

Bats.

I think that money and 'billing' were always bones of contention with the cast although the idea was that nobody was better than anybody else.
I believe it was Charles Hawtrey who demanded more money and/or higher 'billing' and was dropped like a hot potato.

According to my Dad who went to school with him, he was as daft in real life as he was on screen - even at school!

My favourite has got to be Carry On Screaming, there are some great lines, it's got Jim Dale in it and I'd love a dress like Fenella Fielding wears!

Thats why Leslie Philips drops out of the series so early on - the 'Doctor' films payed much better.

Thats the joke that killed the Music Hall !

Over Christmas I watched "Carry On Admiral" with David Tomlinson - moderately funny, but not nearly as absurd as I had expected (or hoped ). I suppose this must be one of the very first - it was made in 1956.

"Carry On Admiral" is not actually one of the "Carry On" films per se. The very first 'actual' "Carry On" film was "Carry On Sergeant" (1958). Val Guest directed "Carry On Admiral", while Gerald Thomas directed all of the 'actual' "Carry On" films. Perhaps that is why you found "Carry On Admiral" less "absurd"!

Oh! That explains it then. Thanks.

Ahh...discovering the Carry Ons for the 1st time...I think all fledgling film/ Brit comedy fans go through this phase. Usually discovered on Uk telly, almost always on..

Carry On Camping is seen as an easy title in the series to get your interest.
I like different titles for different reasons, u know.
Charles Hawtrey, Big Bernie, Sid et al.

The "Carry On" films are a good hour and a half in the "comfort zone". The humour is typical "postcard" humour, full of innuendo. They take us back to an age when political correctness had not been invented and people could (and did) laugh at themselves.

They are, in my opinion, worth a watch, even if just to get a feel for how we would like life to be. They combine a mixture of farce with reality ("Carry On Screaming" and "Carry On Cabby" as two such examples). The cast were ideally suited for their roles and, with special guests (such as Harry H. Corbett and Phil Silvers), this made them just that more special.

I LOVE them!

even funnier if you are a camper, love it when they try to put up the tent and Bernie Bresslaw put his head through the canvas.

A lot of the footage from Carry On Cabby reminds me of what it was like when I was growing up in the UK during the late 50s and early 60s - for some reason my memories of that era are in black and white as well.

My fave Carry On is Cabby although I love them all!

I really enjoy the characters of Peg (The late, great Hattie Jacques) and Flo (the wonderful Esma Cannon).

You have got to admire him for at 90 something churning out novels (self-published) and still planning more films.

Thats the joke that killed the Music Hall !
