A nippy was a waitress who worked at one of the Lyons Corner Houses, I assume so called because they needed to be quick in serving customers!

Quite right, Joenoir.
Of course, if I'd worked there at the time, they'd probably be called a 'not-so-nippy' nowadays! I hasten to add that I was not born then - my grandmother told me about them.

Carry on's will always be best of British although some would disagree but what a great British collection of films that we as British film lovers should all hold dear to our hearts. The Carry on's were and always will be a great way to show how we can laugh at ourselves when you look at how the British were portrayed in them as lusting big boobed and funny and a bit thick to boot.

Carry on Camping was the highest grossing film in the UK for 1969! I think OHMSS was the Bond film for that year. I read that a Norman Wisdom comedy film managed to outgross Bonds first outing "Dr No".....the power of comedy indeed!....

Default Typical Carry On humour

Here is a brief flavour of Carry On humour, from my personal favourite Carry On Camping.

Sid James and entourage drive up to the gate of the camp site. A man on a ladder leans up against a sign which reads “All asses must be shown”.

Sid: Where’s your boss?

Man: He’s gone for a pee.

Peter Butterworth walks up and hands something to the man on the ladder. The man nails a letter “P” to the board so it now reads “All Passes must be shown”.

Classic.

So that is what a "nippy" is. Well, that fits in with the rest of the scene. Captain Peacock threatens to tell the staff about her "secret" and she counters with: (very haughty) It was a CORNER house!

Thanks for the help, folks. I have found about half of the "Carry On" titles on the amazon.com site; they are all second hand videos, ranging in price from $4 to $100 () That is always a good source for hard-to-find films. So I will start my "Carry On" education....

Apparently "Carry On Nurse" was a success in the US back in the 60s. But the others didn't catch on.

Looking around, it seems there hasn't been any Carry On DVD releases in the US for a couple of years now.

I have though found an R1 collection of the first 12 films for $44.88 (see link below).

Hope this helps.

Movies Unlimited in Philadelphia seems to have most of them in stock, including the box set. Just type "Carry On" into the title search and they'll all come up (Carry On Admiral is listed but it's not really part of the Carry On series).

Movies Unlimited in Philadelphia seem to have 'em all in stock, but they are rather expensive. The 12 film set is $10+ more (for example).
