Default Carry on Constable

They featured their own 'repertory' company of actors such as Sid James, Kenneth Williams and Hattie Jacques. These and many other actors played virtually the same character in all the films they appeared in, usually just changing names and jobs, ie doctor, policeman, spy, cowboy, taxi driver etc. They even introduced historical characters such as Henry VIII, Julius Caesar etc. and sometimes parodied other films. Most of them are very funny, particularly the 50s and 60s ones, and very British. Definitely worth watching. My personal favourite .... 'Carry On Constable'.

It is interesting that you think that Carry on Constable is your favourite. I believe that some of it was filmed in my Grandmothers front room - Victor Road, Windsor.

There were also a number of outdoor scenes filmed around West Ealing and Drayton Green (West London).

Yes, the Lyons Corner Houses were considered to be very respectable and quite posh. Capt. Peacock probably found out she was a waitress but being a Nippy in a Corner House was nothing to be embarrassed about

BTW Lyons managed them all with the help of what was almost certainly the first commercial use of a computer. See Wikipedia

Default Carry On Price Drop TV

I can't believe that I didn't buy it, but the other night on Price Drop TV (there was nothing else on ) they had a big boxed set of Carry On DVDs down to £15 before I went out. They may have gone even lower, I don't know! Even charging £7.99 for P&P (Postage and Packing, not Powell & Pressburger ) they were still remarkably cheap!

Of course they were sexist. But they were fun and the ladies usually had the upper hand.

I think it was the lot, it was billed as a complete set. They usually repeat these deals for the same goods every week or two so if I see it again I may buy it this time.

Of course they were, but indeed so was much of the cenematic output of the day.

There will, of course, always be a minority who choose to be offended by such material, but I assume most women have the maturity to accept the sexism in the context of the era the films were made.

I would also have thought the Carry On films are so well known, that anyone with any objection to the content would surely exercise their right not to watch them in the first place.

Just my opinion...

Looking back on those wonderfull days I certainly cant remember people complaining that Carry On films were of a sexist nature, people just accepted them for what they were, however I have no doubt though that Mary Whitehouse thought differently

Yes the carryons were sexist but we still laugh at them, the whole man's world thing was the norm then, Ah BUT NO MORE we are the rulers now so men beware.
