'Charlie Bubbles' - whatever happened to it?
Albert Finney's 'Charlie Bubbles' was a splendid film from 1967, which I saw several times when it came out. It remains the only film Finney has directed, and he also starred in it along with the marvellous Billie Whitelaw. Its only drawback was the presence of a very young Liza Minnelli as an unlikely personal assistant (in more ways than one).
But now, it seems to have vanished off the face of the earth. I don't think it's ever been released on any home video format (certainly not on DVD anyway), and it doesn't seem to have been broadcast in the UK for years either. How do these films just disappear like this? The original production company was Memorial Enterprises, who were also involved with Lindsay Anderson's 'If....' a year later. Does anyone know who currently owns the DVD rights?
Run! Run in the corridor!
