Default No Orchids For Miss Blandish

this is a very strange one, British actors with American accents, film about American gansters. Sid James makes a brief appearance also Michael Balfour is in there somewhere.

In a sense this is in keeping with the novel by James Hadley Chase. Hadley Chase never visited America but set most of his novels there so the film bizarrely replicates this artifice. No Orchids was his first novel and he wrote it with the aid of maps and an American slang dictionary. The novel was a phenomenal success in the states.

It was remade by Robert Aldrich as The Grissom Gang in 1971.

Apparently thee most popular novel during the war and iirc the film caused a right old fuss. It is something of an oddity in that like Mr Moxey's City of the Dead they didn't try and adapt the story to an English setting.

The American studios didn't dare touch it so a British studio tackled it in the hope that it might crack the American market.

I think that the Hays Office has warned off american studios..So out of fairness they banned the film from showing.

The film is one of those curiosities which the Americans couldn't make. Another example - A King in New York. British actors playing Americans in an attack on McCarthyism.
