Thumbs down is the harry potter series british?

Brit cast, one brit director so far, based on a brit book, set in britain, american money (WB). But because of the whole fantasy sfx thing people think it's american (and the WB money probably helps!). does a film need to be social realist to be british? does anyone else feel this is a little unfair?

I think it comes down to how much control Warner have over it - if it were series of films that Warner were merely 'funding' then I would have considered it British, but I think they are also in control of production so on balance I would say they are American films.

I am not a fan but I was pleased that Rowling insisted on an All British cast.

"Oh! Pete!"

I have only seen Philospher's Stone and half of part 2 and did not rate them at all. I have heard they get better though.

So was the Stars Wars trilogy (with Ford etc),but I enjoyed them and more so as I get older. Indeed Harry Potter maybe for kids, but I know a lot of people older and younger than me (45) who enjoy them.

I'm not saying there's anything wrong with enjoying films aimed at kids. Just remember that they are aimed at kids so might not always be as enjoyable for us oldies.

I thoroughly enjoyed things like the Star Wars films (well, the first few, they got silly after that), the Indiana Jones films and many of the Harry Potter films

I never thought the Indiana Jones films were aimed at kids, the storylines seem a bit grown up to me, still fantasy for sure but I thought "The Temple of Doom" was very blood thirsty and quite scary! I really enjoy the Indy films but for some strange reason I have no interest in the "Star Wars" films or "Harry Potter", I guess because as you say those two series of films are very much aimed at kids though adults may enjoy them as well, but Im not so sure that Indiana Jones was aimed at 10 year olds in the way that Star Wars or Harry Potter is....IMHO..!

Original Star Wars, Bond and Indiana Jones occupy that grey region between children's films and proper adult films - kiddie friendly concepts like dinosaurs and spaceships but screwed into place by adult narrative. I watched some of Empire Strike's Back yesterday and it was difficult to tear myself away - Lucas and Spielberg at their best were just so engaging. Let's hope Lucas can redeem himself with Indiana Jones 4 after those disgraceful prequels.
