No, I just made it up. I can't think why it never occurred to me before. It's more cultured than Paddy.... imho........

That's exactly how I see it and is why I am completely comfortable watching it. It's one of my favourites but you have to see it in this light.

There's some great chemistry between Sid James and Joan Sims; it's a pity though that it is in the context of an extra marital dalliance. I completely agree with you about the strip poker element.

The height of the series was in the sixties. I do agree,Graeme,"England" and "Emmanuelle" were woefully bad,the latter being an embarrassment to the memory of the great actors who contributed to the series since its inception.

I saw it not as being anti-union,but a bit of a skit against the union hot heads who called a strike on a whim, which was rife in those days.

What about Carry on Columbus? That was the "reboot" that should have been booted out

I've said it before and I'll say it again - I liked Columbus (as did the Barbican audience at the complete retrospective in the 90s). The then-Young Turks of Britcom like Julian Clary and Rik Mayall fitted in well, there were some suitably corny jokes and Jim Dale made a good lead. it really isn't half as bad as everyone says. Even Emmanuelle has some amusing moments (the flashbacks). England is the only one completely devoid of any merit, IMO.

Well, said Captain! I thought Columbus was a bit of a return to form. It was a pity it got dumped on so badly.

The critics were waiting to pounce on it - and everybody goes along with them... Except we strong-willed types who know our own tastes, eh?

Totally agree with you, Marky. I feel that Carry on Dick was the last true Carry On film, not only because of Sid, it was also the final one scripted by the peerless Talbot Rothwell. Things were just never the same again afterward.

It's a lot more entertaining than either of the 'proper' Columbus films released that year, especially the awful Ridley Scott one

I didn't realise that was 'our' Jim Dale - he reads HP with a horrid american accent - surely 'our' jim Dale wouldn't do that - would he ??

Yes - looking forward to seeing this, having heard lots of good things about it.
