Channel 4 are showing this 1958 John Gregson film at 1.20pm on June 12th in High Definition and in 16:9 Widescreen. The original, slightly longer, UK print was called 'Gideon's Day' and was set for release on DVD here by DD Video in 2007 but they went bust (did any DVD's actually come out I wonder?). This film was made in colour but Digiguide says this upcoming Channel 4 airing is in black & white which is strange seeing as Channel 4 last screened this 10 years ago it was apparently in colour (I missed it back then). Still, it will be great to get a better copy than my off-air TCM Canada version, and in HD and 16:9 too!

A pedant writes... Jack Hawkins surely rather than Greggers?

Oops, I meant to say Jack Hawkins (John Gregson was in the TV series that followed of course). Apologies CaptainWaggett! If a moderator could edit my original post I'd appreciate it (I can't seem to do this myself).

And what a day Gideon had! He packed an amazing amount of crime fighting into 24 hours. The Met could do with his type now

He runs a red light dropping his daughter (Anna Massey) at music college and is caught by a keen young PC (Andrew Ray).

Directed by the great John Ford - odd choice of project for the Hollywood director.

If Ch4 really are showing the truncated b/w version, the ought to be ashamed of themselves!

    To Captain Waggett

I can't believe they had double yellow lines in the 1950's????

Good Old Channel 4 still knocking out the occasional gem on their weekday lunchtime film spot. Be happy for that and don't be so grumpy.

    How dare you!

You may be happy with poor quality bastardized versions of great films - but I am not.

    That is not being grumpy.

With this film not being available on DVD or Blu-ray, I'm very grateful for Channel 4 for showing an HD 16:9 print so that I can record it to a Blu-ray.

As the only British film directed by the great John Ford, always welcome. See http://www.find-dvd.co.uk/dvd/Gideon-s-Day/1073089.htm

The DD-Video DVD release was due to come out in 2007 but the company went bust the very same week! The DVD box states it would have been 100 minutes long which is longer than the approx 90-minute US print which Channel 4 are showing next week. Still, the TV showing is in lovely HD :)

Did anyone receive their DVD of this film before DD-Video went belly up? http://www.dvdsource.co.uk/product?p...partner=108257

I always thought it was a black and white film but I see that according to IMDb it was shown b&w in USA and colour in the UK. How odd - assuming that's right. I'm sure previous TV showings have been b&w

I've just dug out my old video tape which must have been made when it was last shown on Channel 4, a quick glance tells me it's in colour and I'll watch it in full this weekend. Also on the tape is a Dirk Bogarde "Arena" programme, Doctor at Sea and The Glenn Miller Story. I'll probably have square eyes by Monday !!

Looked great in HD. Is that a model shot of traffic going over Westminster Bridge at the very beginning? Certainly looks like it.

The daytime ones while the titles were displayed? They look OK. Or do you mean this one as Gideon looks out of his office window?

There's something not quite right about it. The buses look to be moving slightly jerkily.
