Default Hugh Laurie

My family has been enjoying Hugh Laurie in House here for several years as well as some of his other TV appearances. I was trying to identify some of his earlier movies. and was wondering what the consensus of the Forum was to his work and any recommendations concerning performances he is especially noted for.
Appreciate any comments,
Malcolm M.

He plays a very good Bertie Wooster in the Jeeves and Wooster TV series. Very enjoyable and worth watching.

I loved him and Stephen Fry as "Jeeves and Wooster". I also loved both of them in all of the "Blackadder" series. (Both TV) Hated 'Maybe Baby'.

It's a matter of personal choice though, isn't it?

Starry x.

I too have enjoyed watching Hugh Laurie in House and have all the available DVD's. His career on film is quite small. His performance in "maybe Baby" was very good although the script wasn't. My favourite British film featuring him is "Peter's Friends". Although it had everything going for it as it also starred most of his Cambridge Footlights companions.

He was not bad in that, however, Ian Carmichael and Dennis Price were the defenitive Jeeves and Wooster imo.

It's a shame that vitually no footage of The World of Wooster exists for viewers who weren't around in the sixties to judge. All I can say is whenever I read a Jeeved and Wooster story (which are almost all written as if by Bertie) I imagine the voice of Hugh Lawrie in my head.

Ian Carmichael remains to me, however, the definitive Lord Peter Wimsey.

"A bit of Fry and Laurie" is well worth a look.

Default Mr Little

Hugh was of course Mr Little in the first two Stuart Little movies, where he first tried out his (to my ear) perfect american accent. On a chat show he suggested only half jokingly that the only reason he was cast was that at well over six foot he was the only actor who could act opposite the giant Geena Davis!

Blackadder 3 & 4, definitely. His fashion-obsessed Prince Regent and naive young officer are delightfully funny!

Hear, hear. Too bad so little of their series exists.
