Not a very well known one, but The Last Tram, a short directed by yet-to-be eminent film historian Kevin Brownlow, is a smashing documentary of the last night of tram services in Glasgow, is now available to download very cheaply from the BFI website...it owes a bit to a more famous John Krish short which name escapes me, but I recommend it wholeheartedly. Default Award Wining BTF Titles

Only Wild Wings won an Oscar. Journey into Spring was nominated but did not win. In my opinion Journey into Spring is a better film. Same wonderful photography from Paddy Carey but with the added advantage of a script by Laurie Lee and Technicolor. Wild Wings was Eastmancolor which sadly over the years has faded.

BTF won over 200 awards. they are listed on the British Transport Films Website.

Did anyone spot the 15 seconds of Ralph Vaughan Williams at the recording session for England of Elizabeth in Tony Palmer's three hour biography of RVW shown on New Year's Day at the early hour of 9 am on Channel 5? In the shot was BTF's chief editor John Legard, happily still around.

Default Tram Films

Kevin Brownlow's "Nine Dalmiur West" (Glasgow's last Tram) pays homage to "The Elephant Will Never Forget "by John Krish. Krish was employed by Edgar Anstey at BTF to shoot footage of the last tram week in London just for the record. Krish and his cameraman Bob Paynter shot more than Edgar was prepared to sanction. They did it by using shot ends from the other BTF crews and traveling by public transport with a Newman Sinclair camera, tripod and film stock as the office withdrew the unit car from them. In the end Krish was allowed to edit the material together and "the Elephant" became BTF's most screened film. However Krish did not receive another commission form BTF until after Edgar Anstey had retired. Krish's second commission turned out to be BTF's most controversial film "The Finishing Line" but thats another story!

Watched ALL THAT MIGHTY HEART s.e. at a single sitting the other day, after a super-fast delivery from Beulah. Enjoyed it immensely and will be back for more soon. Thanks very much.

What about the film Robbery with Stanley Baker about the 'Great Train Robbery.
Two things stand out for me, the cleanliness and classic appeal of the night mail train
and the obvious cleanliness of the London streets during the car chases (well, three, how about the police without yellow jackets!

That's what often gives away a scene as having been shot in the studio.
The streets are too neat and clean. No rubbish, no broken paving stones.

If the street scene is a studio it must be fantastic! Can others put a view? Actually
London was much cleaner in 1966!

I was talking about the general case, not necessarily about this particular film. I don't know if that scene was studio based or not

I recall reading an interview with Peter Yates and he stated that all the exterior filming on Robbery was done on location in and around London, including the car chase. The only exception being the final scene.

on and off the rails is a good double disc set. I just swapped it among several other discs. Many interesting period documentaries on it.

Default Awards

Not quite correct.

Wild Wings did win the American Academy Award for Best Documentary.

Journey in to Spring was nominated but did not win, it did however win a BAFTA award.

Both are natural history films. In the case of Journey in Spring is literally Sparked off the BBC to establish a natural history unit in Bristol.

Personally I prefer Laurie Lee's script and Paddy Carey's photography for Journey into Spring. In fact Paddy shot both films.

Haven't seen it, but The Last Journey is supposed to be one of the greatest British B-movies.
Not sure if this is it: The Last Journey (1936)
