Spooky classics - Britmovie

Could anybody give me some recomendations of some good old classic films..some of my favourites are will hay,frankie howerd I especially like spooky classics like the dead of night..

Maybe The Halfway House, Friday the Thirteenth, The Ghost Train, House of the Long Shadows, Back-Room Boy and Thunder Rock.

How's about 'Night of the Demon' and 'Night of the Eagle' - both classics worthy of the 'horror/occult' genre tag I say. Still crop up on C4 in the UK. Also, the original 'Haunting' (avoid the horrendous remake at all costs) and 'The Innocents' - ooh, spooky! More up to date, well 80's I think, the made for TV (television not tranny) 'The Woman In Black'. Go scare yourself silly with these gems!

I agree with Adrian about Night of the Demon, and Night of the Eagle - you can't go wrong with those two. Another one in a different vein is "City of the Dead" AKA "Horror Hotel" (1960). A UK film, although set in the US, starring Christopher Lee, about witches. It is B/W and has a great "spooky" atmosphere, all swirling fog and shadows.

Good call from Welshpaul - 'City Of The Dead' is a cracking film, one of the best 'craft' related films and relatively obscure. Hope it doesn't get 'discovered' and re-made. I can't believe they are remaking the Wicker Man! Is the U.S. so short of original ideas?

How about, also, "The Uninvited" a genuinely spooky film made in 1944 (but, sorry, in the US, although I think supposedly set in Britain). Starring Ray Milland and directed by Lewis Allen.

It is the more scary for not showing loads of ghosts - though I've just read in Halliwell that this was due to the British censor cutting them out, so I'm not sure now if I've seen the British or US version! An excellent film, nevertheless, and highly recommended if you haven't seen it.
