Michael Parkinson, Des Lynam and Leslie Phillips are among the TV veterans named in the Queen's New Year honours list published today - along with former Neighbours star Kylie Minogue.
Parkinson, who presented his last ever chatshow on ITV1 earlier this month, is knighted, as is Nicholas Kenyon, the former controller of BBC Radio 3 and head of the BBC Proms, who is now managing director of the Barbican. Minogue, who appeared alongside David Tennant in this year's Doctor Who Christmas Special but has long been known as a singer rather than an actor, receives an OBE, as does Lynam, the former Match of the Day presenter who is now one of the faces of pay-TV operator, Setanta Sport. Elsewhere in the media industry there are OBEs for BBC News presenter George Alagiah and Harper's Bazaar editor-in-chief Glenda Bailey, for services to British journalism and British fashion in the US. OBEs also go to Pie in the Sky actor Richard Griffiths and Roy Dotrice, who was in 1980s US series Beauty and the Beast. Phillips, famous for his seductively drawled catchphrase "Hellooo" receives a CBE. There are also CBEs for fellow actor Julie Walters and playwright, author and director Hanif Kureishi. Sir Ian McKellen becomes a Companion of Honour. Parkinson, 72, who presented his first chatshow in 1971, was tipped for a knighthood earlier this month. More than 5 million viewers saw his last ever show on ITV1 when he looked back on some of his most famous and best-remembered guests. He has also stepped down from his Sunday morning show on BBC Radio 2. Kenyon oversaw the BBC Proms from 1996 until earlier this year, when he stepped down to become the new managing director of the Barbican. A former music critic for the New Yorker and chief music critic of the Observer, he was controller of Radio 3 between 1992 and 1999 and was awarded a CBE in 2001. There is also an OBE for Bob Hutchinson, former vice-chairman of the Defence, Press and Broadcasting Committee and defence correspondent of the Press Association during the Falklands war. |

Julie Walters is renowned for playing Julie Walters....
![]() She gets a CBE yet there's good old Dougie Slocombe with his huge career and just a measly OBE. Never a great fan of Roy Dotrice but I think an OBE is a little on the lame side for him, too. Smudge |

Parky does little for me and "5 million viewers saw his last ever show" is hardly an indication he was in the public's affection. Really glad for Leslie Phillips tho, bless the old letch.

So, at last, someone who deserves it.
An OBE for cinematographer Douglas Slocombe at the ripe old age of ninety four. Did many of the early Ealing comedies. Worth a medal in themselves. Amongst his works: Dead Of Night Kind Hearts And Coronets Hue and Cry The Lavender Hill Mob It Always Rains On Sunday The Man In The White Suit The Titfield Thunderbolt The Smallest Show On Earth THe L Shaped Room The Servant Also The Italian Job, The Music Lovers and the Indiana Jones films in later works. Not a bad body of work and I have omitted several other notables. |

From the interviews I've read he comes over fairly bitter and arrogant, but I've wondered if it's just an act as I've seen him give contrasting views of his parents. I'm not sure if the actor Griffiths and character Monty are that far apart (except the sexuality). |
