These so called honours mean nothing really... I do not begrudge anyone who is offered these gongs nor those who accept them... but I find the whole 'honours' system ridiculous...

Especially after the 'cash-for-honours' malarky. Alot of people say publicly they don't want one......but when offered change their minds.

That's the joke that killed the Music Hall

I'm sure I recall Michael Caine in an interview many years ago talking about the honours system and ridiculing the title of "Sir Son-of-a bitch"!

I will often call someone "Sir" as a mark of respect - or so it seems, they don't know when I'm spelling it "Cur"

This will sound old-fashioned -- and I'm not, really -- but it would please me no end if one day someone called me "madam".
The best that can be expected here in Oz is "ma'am", which makes me grit my teeth and hold back an overwhelming desire to say very crossly, "I am not the Queen; nor is this America, it's Australia. Please call me "madam!"

I can recall only one occasion when I have been called "madam", and that was by a London bus conductor, who looked like Murray Head.

A memorable moment!

"Call me Madam"? Didn't Ethel Merman make a film about that?
Make sure they don't call you Madame and think you have a house of "working girls"

It amuses me that I'm now so old that shop assistants (in the better shops) call me "Sir"

Steve

And so they should - you've lived long enough to deserve some respect!

My husband and I checked in recently at a 4-star motor inn and the receptionist called us "guys" ! "How long are you guys staying?" and "Enjoy your stay, guys." She was pleasant enough, though. Perhaps it was intended to make us feel young!
