Default BAFTA Nominations for 2008

The Independent
16 January 2008
14 Bafta nominations for Atonement - Independent Online Edition > News
By Sherna Noah, PA Showbusiness Correspondent

The movie Atonement has received 14 nominations for the Orange British Academy Film Awards, it was announced today.
It has been nominated in the top categories Best Film and Best British Film. Keira Knightley and James McAvoy have been nominated for Leading Actress and Leading Actor.
The film is also up for Best Director for Joe Wright, Adapted Screenplay, Music, Cinematography, Editing, Production Design, Sound, Costume Design and Make-Up and Hair. Saoirse Ronan receives a Supporting Actress nomination.
No Country For Old Men, the latest film from the Coen brothers, and There Will Be Blood, starring Daniel Day-Lewis, each receive nine nominations.
La Vie En Rose, the movie about French singer Edith Piaf, is up for seven gongs.
The Bourne Ultimatum has six nominations, with American Gangster , The Lives Of Others and Michael Clayton getting five each.
Cate Blanchett is up for two awards - for Supporting Actress for I'm Not There and Leading Actress for her role in Elizabeth: The Golden Age .
Elizabeth: The Golden Age also received nominations for Production Design, Costume Design and Make-Up and Hair.
Other Leading Actress nominees are Golden Globe winner Julie Christie for Away From Her, French star Marion Cotillard for La Vie En Rose, Canadian actress Ellen Page for Juno as well as Knightley for Atonement.
The Baftas could steal the limelight away from the Oscars this year because of the ongoing writers' strike, which has thrown the Academy Awards into jeopardy.
This year's Golden Globes ceremony, where Atonement won Best Film, was replaced by a short press conference and no stars turned up.
The fact that Atonement leads the Bafta nominations list is more good news for the British film, based on the romantic novel by Ian McEwan, which is set around the Second World War.
Atonement star McAvoy will be competing with Hollywood heartthrob George Clooney (Michael Clayton), Daniel Day-Lewis (There Will Be Blood), Viggo Mortensen (Eastern Promises) and Ulrich Muhe ( The Lives Of Others) in the Leading Actor category.
Paul Greengrass is up against fellow British filmmaker Wright for Best Director for The Bourne Ultimatum, starring Matt Damon, along with the Coen brothers for No Country For Old Men.

Atonement lands top Bafta Award

BBC NEWS | Entertainment | Atonement lands top Bafta Award

Day-Lewis said he was "very proud to have been included"

Atonement has been named best film at the Bafta Awards - although some other hotly tipped nominees missed out.
As expected, Daniel Day-Lewis was named best actor for his performance in oil prospecting drama There Will Be Blood.
But Britain's Julie Christie was pipped to the best actress prize by Marion Cotillard, the French star of Edith Piaf biopic La Vie En Rose.
Michael Clayton star Tilda Swinton was also a surprise recipient of the best supporting actress prize.
The best supporting actor gong went to Spain's Javier Bardem for No Country For Old Men, which also saw Joel and Ethan Coen named best director.
'Astonishing'
Atonement, a World War II romance starring James McAvoy and Keira Knightley, began the night with 14 nominations - more than any other film.
In the end, though, it took home just one other prize - for production design - as well as best film.

La Vie En Rose, in contrast, was also recognised for its music, costume design and make-up - giving it four awards in total.
Out of the four, it was Cotillard's that took most by surprise.
"It has been the most incredible adventure," said the 32-year-old in an emotional speech. "I loved very single second."
Collecting his prize, Daniel Day-Lewis paid his own tribute to the French star.
"Never mind all the other qualities in her astonishing performance," he said. "For sheer balls alone, I feel Marion should have this award as well."
The screenplay awards went to Ronald Harwood for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly and to Diablo Cody for US comedy Juno.

German drama The Lives of Others, winner of the best foreign film at the Oscars last year, was named best film not in the English language.
Sir Anthony Hopkins was presented with an Academy fellowship at the star-studded event, hosted by Jonathan Ross.
And Shane Meadows was an unexpected recipient of the best British film award, given to his semi-autobiographical skinhead tale This is England.
Sylvester Stallone, Cuba Gooding Jr, Jeff Goldblum and Kevin Spacey were among the Hollywood stars to present awards.
Eddie Izzard, Thandie Newton and Sir Ian McKellen were among the British talents handing out trophies.
Other stars in attendance included Kate Hudson, Jessica Biel and Emily Blunt.
The Baftas have taken on a greater significance this year following the cancellation of the Golden Globes in January.
The event comes two weeks before the Academy Awards, to be held in Los Angeles on 24 February.

I haven't seen any of these films.

It's probably just me, but they all sound ghastly !

Not my idea of entertainment at all.

I suppose history will judge them. I thought it rather subtle of the BBC to follow the broadcasted ceremony with a film that, so far as I can see never received any such plaudits, but is possibly better than any of them......

Was a bit odd that having won Best Film it lost out in Best British Film to This is England. Atonement opens rather intrigingly but then loses it way. The one redeeming feature is the lengthy Dunkirk tracking shot.

Well, there you go...I thought it was the best british film I'd seen for about ten years or more. Each to his or her own...a far more impressive achievement than The Queen, for example...

Bit of a Bay Window, what??

Categories are always a mystery.
How come, in years when the Best Film is undoubtedly British, it can be nominated for Best British Film - and not win?
It's the best film of all the films - but not the best British Film?
