My all time favourite book and one of my favourite films - what was the play like and how did Duncan Preston measure up against Gregory Peck's sublime performance. I have no doubt he would have done well as he is an underused actor on television. He is brilliant in Emmerdale as Paula Wilcox's hen-pecked husband.

Once saw David Soul in the Billingham Arms after a performance in a play over the road. Mellow chap depsite (or maybe because of) being well-oiled on Budweiser. He as very chatty with the crusty locals (some real characters in there) and I asked him which piece of work he was most proud of - 'Salem's Lot' he cried without hesitation. Very approachable man.

Sadly en-route to the west-end Soul was dropped and replaced by Daniel T Trevanti.

Thats the joke that killed the Music Hall !

I can remember when David Soul was at the Billingham Forum, but I can't remember the name of the play. Do you live far from Billingham? BTW,the Forum was threatened with closure,as the theatre part was the only section making money, but the threat has been lifted as the Forum is classed as some sort of listed building. Arnold Schwarzenegger once appeared at the Forum many, many moons ago (not as Widow Twankey,I hasten to add),but at a bodybuilding convention.

The play was The Aspern Papers. I know the Forum has had problems for the last 10 years. From my point of view as a theatre goer there isn't that much on in terms of good legit theatre. Years ago it was a different story - Timothy West ran a rep company there for two years in the 70s putting on classical and modern plays with some success and Peter Ustinov premiered a play there. I've seen Trevor Howard, John Mills and Deborah Kerr and many other greats there over the years. Darlington Civic seems to get most of the good quality stuff now which is sad. I'm just over the border in North Yorks so Billingham is easier to get to than Darlo.

Thats the joke that killed the Music Hall !

A friend of mine found himself in a London suburban train compartment with Olly one day. "Have a drink, dear boy", he said, pulling a bottle of whiskey from his pocket. My friend was a tee-totaller but listened in awe as Olly gave his opinions on life, the universe and everything.

I spoke to Jennifer Ehle in a fish`n`chip shop in Stratford upon Avon. She`d just finished an afternoon performance in one play (which I`d watched), and she was getting her tea before she appeared in another play in the evening. This was in 1995. She was very down to earth, and pleasant to talk to. (Very pretty as well !)

I saw another version of The Aspern Papers with Gerald Harper.

My Dad's secretary was accidentally knocked off her bike during the the production of The Omen at Shepperton. The driver was none other that Gregory Peck himself.

He stopped and reversed and wound down his window - she imagined he was going to apologise or ask if she was ok.

"Why don't you mind where you're bloody well going!" And he swiftly drove away...

Leslie Crowther - delightful and a boyhood hero of mine from !Crackerjack!
June Brown - very well-spoken and friendly - liked a ciggy though.
Lesley Joseph - very bubbly and incredibly willing to please her fans.
Jeremy Hardy - he was working a proper show and I was introduced in the bar afterwards. Very easy to talk to, and chatty.
Jimmy Cricket - one of the best 'gag' merchants I've ever seen. He was very quiet and focussed on getting things right.

Diana Dors was my only A-Lister. She was brusquely professional but did remark I was cute (I was very young and still almost blond) as she psyched herself to walk into her adoring public.

There's a few others (I'll post as they come to mind). None of them will remember me......

Guys on here who worked in theatres must have reams and reams of names they could reel off..........

Have you not met the great man ?? (Patrick) ????

Jack Cardiff, always a joy to meet. 93 and still working when a project interests him enough. Still travelling around giving masterclasses and talks, introducing films and sharing his memories of them

I met Leo Marks & Virginia McKenna at the opening of the Violette Szabo museum in Herefordshire. Virginia made the main speech and spent the whole afternoon talking to people and signing things. Leo was very quiet and introspective. I spoke to him briefly about his work with Powell but that day was obviously for Violette so I left him to his memories. Sadly he died shortly after that so we never had a chance to get together again.

Lots of other cast and crew from the P&P films, all of them very nice.
Lots of family members of the cast & crew of P&P films, all of them very nice.
Lots of other admirers of P&P films, famous or not, all of them very nice.

A special mention for Thelma Schoonmaker, Michael Powell's widow and Scorsese's multi Oscar winning editor. A very busy lady but she always makes time for us in the P&P Appreciation Society and has been very helpful.

I find that with most people, no matter what their level of fame or position, if you treat them normally then they're usually very nice. Don't interrupt them when they're obviously busy doing something else. Don't just play the fawning fan but talk to them reasonably and honestly and they usually respond in a similar way.

Steve

Regarding your last paragraph, I met you once and you told me to P*** off

I met David Soul during the tour of Deathtrap. Very approachable and friendly, if a little tiddly!

To Kill A Mockingbird is a favourite book and film of mine too MarkyB ... during another production of TKAM I met Richard Johnson who was playing Atticus (very good he was too, if a little too old). He was most charming and every inch a 'star'.

Hardly be likely to want to talk to a sycophant like me now, would he........ ...... There's a fair few who have, that have scattered their tales across the web, and there's scarcely one who seemed to have a bad word to say about him.

I think as has been said, that all these people are gonna be nice, given the chance. The recent fashion in celeb-comedy for fooling them into interviews and then insulting and/or belittling them probably hasn't done the average fan who just wants to say 'Thanks' and let them know they're appreciated, many favours.

Of course when they're at work they're probably as grumpy as the rest of us!

Salem's Lot is an excellent horror movie, the best of the Stephen King's transfers to the silver screen.

Surely not. That must have been two different people called Steve.

I don't use expressions like that. I'm either very polite or a lot ruder
