Default Classic British Crime Films

Hello,
I am looking for - let's say typical - british crime movies (who done it? etc). To give an idea what I am looking for: films from the 40s, 50s, 60s like the Miss Marples with Rutherford, films like "The Cat and the Canary", etc. with (for me) typical british atmosphere, which means, showing the country, London, etc.
Can you help and mention as much as possible? Maybe those which are available on DVD or Video?
Many thanks in advance and personal emails to me most welcome.
Thanks from Spain
Wilfried

To be honest this is my type of film and is the genre which British film makers are the best in the world at.

I'm not exactly sure what exact type you are seeking but for me the following fit the bill

Hell is a City 1959 Dir Val Guest
League of Gentlemen 1960 Dir Basil Dearden
It always rains on Sunday 1947 Dir Robert Hamer
Pink String and Sealing Wax 1945 Dir Robert Hamer
The Long Arm 1956 Dir Charles Frend
The Long Memory 1952 Dir Robert Hamer
Blind Date 1959 Dir Joseph Losey
The Boys 1962 Dir Sidney J Furie
Robbery 1967 Dir Peter Yates

Once I get started I could go on for ever, I apologise if these don't suit, but for me these are all masterpieces which I could quite happily watch on a continuous tape loop for eternity.

In a Miss Marple vein, maybe Shot in the Dark (not the Sellers film), Ghost Camera, the Inspector Hornleigh and Father Brown films.

I think Guinness only played the role once but I'm sure others have portrayed Chesterton's sleuth.

I thank you all so much for your replies (and please dont't stop in doing it!!!!). Well, I am living in Spain since six years now, but I am German. Maybe this is the reason that I like two German FATHER BROWN movies, made in the 60's. They are really excellent, they are available on VHS and DVD as well, but only in the original, German, version. Nevertheless I will mention these two: 1. DAS SCHWARZE SCHAF (The Black Sheep)(1960), 2. ER KANN'S NICHT LASSEN (He can't stop it)(1962). They have been a huge success in cinema and every year broadcasted in the German TV. The actor was Heinz Rühmann, one of the most popular German actors. He died ten years ago at the age of 92. He also played once Maigret (also a German production) and has appeared only in one international production which was SHIP OF FOOLS (1965).
I am happy that I found BRITMOVIE and other fans of British Cinema!!!!!!

What a shame.
He was remarkable Julius Lowenthal the Jew. And he also played Dr Watson. :)

Well, he really did NOT play Watson - because it is a funny movie about two guys which mislead other people in telling them, that they are Holmes and Watson! Don't look for a new Sherlock Homes movie. It is not!

By the way, Herr (Senor?) Mueller, have you seen "Murder Rooms" with Ian Richardson as "the real Sherlock Holmes"? Excellent and surprisingly fresh variation on now too-familiar theme. "The Patient's Eyes" and "The Photographer's Chair" are favourites of mine.

Many thanks for that information. As a matter of fact I haven't heard of this series. But I am going to London next week and will look for it at the movieshops. Thanks again.

Hi Brian,
many thanks for mentioning that title. No, I have never seen this picture. Unfortunately all the good films members like you menitoned are not available on DVD (at the moment). And because I can't receive english TV programmes it seems to me that I'll have to wait ages untill I can watch them.
Nevertheless a big THANKS YOU and don't stop naming titles.
