Smile City Of The Dead

I read this today in the Daily Mail's Answer to Correspondents and I thought I share it with you all as one of our members gets a mention.

QUESTION:What is the horror film featured in the Iron Maiden video for Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter?

Answer curtesy of Ian Caunce,Rochdale:This is a British film made in 1960 called City Of The Dead directed by John Llewellyn Moxey. Moxey made only three films, the other two were Foxhole In Cairo and Circus Of Fear.
People praise Alfred Hitchcock, and were amazed by his film Psycho in which his heroine is killed midway through the film. Well,John Llewellyn Moxey beat him to it by six months.
His heroine,Venetia Stephenson (as Nan Barlow),is sent to a village for witchcraft research by her college professor - a smooth and menacing Christopher Lee - and is sacrificed by a local coven.
Also featured were Patricia Jessel (as Elizabeth Selwyn) and Valentine Dyall (as Jethro Keane),both members of the coven and singer Dennis Lotis.
An excellent, atmospheric film made by Vulcan films (later to become Amicus Productions) at Shepperton Studios.

Well done,John. I haven't heard of the film, but I will be seeking it out. Even Halliwell's Film Guide gives it a thumbs up.

Steve, City Of The Dead / Horror Hotel did not have an iron maiden in them! But to answer your question:-

In this case, the Iron Maiden being referred to is the name of a popular beat combo m'lud. Not a reference to the popular medieval instrument of torture

It's quite common for pop videos to include clips of old films in them - it saves them from having to do anything original. And it is often without the knowledge, let alone the approval of the rights holder. They do the same with other people's music and call it "sampling" - but it's still really "stealing".

Horror Hotel fell into the public domain in the us but when City of the Dead had its copyright restored in the US in 1996, the edited down version, Horror Hotel, came out of the public domain.

Again, all those copies of Horror Hotel are bootlegs.

John, Do you mean to say you your film work has never had a screening on French or German television in the last 25 years?

But Iron Maiden are a British band so their usage of a film should come under British copyright law

Seeing a Thread that has developed into a discussion of the works of John Llewellyn Moxey, I wonder if anyone (apart from Mr. L-M obviously) recalls seeing the play that, legendarily, brought Patrick McGoohan to the attention of Lew Grade.

For a play that is quoted ad-nauseum on the internet there seems remarkably little actually known about it nowadays.
BFI | Film & TV Database | The BIG KNIFE (1958)

I recall Mr. McGoohan being quoted in one interview, where he referred directly to it: That the original was 'very cynical' about the machinations of Hollywood, and those elements had been 'toned down' for the TV production.............

I was wondering if that was a directorial decision, Mr.L-M?..........

I've also seen reference to a review of it in a New York 'paper, which would suggest a filmed copy was shown in America. In truth, I haven't managed to locate the actual review however.

I do get residuals for foreign showings of my films. I am not sure about my UK films though! I had better look it up. Thanks for the nudge.

I never knew of this McGoohan version .... I love the Palance version and knew of the 1980s remake but to see McGoohan have a crack at Charles Castle must've been something.

No, I had not much influence on the script. It was a great cast and fun to work on.
