There's some classic moments in that scene. Brian Glover diving Franny Lee-style for the penalty. Re-taking said penalty after having his first effort saved. His gleeful celebration after finally scoring. His slapping of that schoolboy. All brilliantly funny.

Fantastic stuff. Glover was brilliant in it. Francis Lee was the first division's top scorer for one season with 30 odd goals, 15 or 16 of these coming from penalty spot.

I forget the exact wording, but when Judd comes in drunk and he and Billy have this conversation about work.

"Gooin' darn't pit! they wouldn't tek on a little twat like thee!
It always makes me fall off my chair with laughter.
I was brought up in Lancashire(near Leigh) and they spoke in very similar dialect.

I always think that Kes and Whistle Down the Wind are related somewhat

Yes, mainly. That's where it was meant to be set.
A few scenes were filmed in other places in the Barnsley area of South Yorkshire like Hoyland (Billy's house) and Tankersley (the farm where he sees the kestrels). The school is the one now called Edward Sheerien school in Barnsley

Totally agree with the Kes PE scene and also the Dunstan & Dudley Dorchester scene from "School for scoundrels"....I'd also like to nominate about 3/4 of the script for Cook/Moore's "Bedazzled"

The vast majority of the film was shot in and around Barnsley as Steve mentions but I think that some of the busy street scenes and the bookshop scene were filmed in Sheffield. Whether this was because Barnsley didn't have a bookshop I wouldn't like to say!

Yes you're right, a few of the scenes were filmed in Manor Top in Sheffield
