Default Best British disaster movies?

I watched a bit of "Earthquake" last night and tried to think of some equivalent british disaster movies, I did not get very far,
The Day the Earth Caught Fire and A Night to Remember are the only titles I could come up with that might fall in that category, but I am sure all the clever folk out there can think of more.

Threads is a fairly apocalyptical and bleak view of the UK.

The TV series Survivors
The Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The Day of the Triffids
The War Game

Some are more post-apocalyptic like:
28 Days Later / 28 Weeks Later
The Bed Sitting Room

But the classic type of "disaster movie" where a group of people in a building, ship, train or bus are trapped in that closed environment and undergo some disaster which kills all but a handful of plucky survivors - does seem to be a peculiarly American thing.

There are quite a few British films about natural "disasters" or man made events that killed a lot of people. Or the "personal disaster" type where only a few people are involved.

The closest you can get to the American disaster movie in British film is probably the science fiction films like Quatermass and the Pit, The War of the Worlds etc.

Seven Days to Noon would thin out the population of London. Is that really so bad?

There's also Lifeforce; invasion by scantily-clad females, Daleks: Invasion Earth and Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy. Can't think of many like those that were popular Stateside during the 50s with flyng saucers etc.

The only British movie I can think of that's comparable to the American disaster movie is Juggernaut (1974). Cracking film; textbook filmmaking, in my opinion.

Agree re JUGGERNAUT. It wasn't intended as a disaster film, and is about a disaster being AVERTED, but it's an all-star group jeopardy movie so it has a lot in common with American equivalents.Going further back, I think THE CLAIRVOYANT had some disaster scenes, and then there's ATLANTIC, E.A. Dupont's early talkie version of the Titanic story...

The way I remember it she didn't even have scanties (although I haven't seen it since I was a teenager but that was the bit that stuck out).

Really ... must we have such smut on the forum?

Rev. Wellard Rubberlove

PS
Just out of curiosity - which bit was it that stuck out, exactly? Also, is it available on DVD (and will they deliver to the vestry in plain wrapping)?

It was a long time ago and I can't possibly remember such minor details...
