Default Most Wanted

Talking about the absence of Launder and Gilliat movies on a earlier thread has lead me to wonder about what British movies you'd like to see given the DVD treatment. Though there is a lot of good movies out there, I'm certain that there most be ones which you can't wait to see released.

Here's some of my choices:

01. Green For Danger 1946
02. Where's That Fire 1938 (not shown on tv, not on VHS or DVD, this really needs to be released)
03. The October Man 1948
04. Jigsaw 1963
05. The Happiest Days Of Your Life 1950
06. The Brides Of Dracula 1960
07. It Always Rains On Sunday 1947
08. Please Turn Over 1959
09. Father Brown 1954
10. Raising The Wind 1961

I've never quite understood the fascination with Where's That Fire as imho it falls below the standard of many of Hay's other films.

I'd prefer to see My Learned Friend get the DVD treatment as Hay, Hulbert (replacing Marriott $ Moffatt as the stooge) and Johns are a delight.

My Learned Friend is my favourite Will Hay movie :) but I'm in no great hurry for the DVD because I bought the video boxset of the Ealing movies late last year.

With Where's That Fire, a lot of the attraction (for me at any rate) is that it's the only major Hay movie that I don't have. It must be at least 10-15 years or maybe more since I last watched it and even if it's one of the weaker ones, it would be nice to watch.

Is it true that it's been stuck in legal limbo for a few years now, that the company who owns the rights to it refuses to allow it to be shown? If that's true thats quite sad and a bit spiteful.

If you do a search on ebay you should find a copy - but be wary not to pay more than say £10. They are some 2nd gen rarities sold on there for extortionate prices.

I'm surprised you never mentioned Peter Cook's Rise and Rise of Michael Rimmer. (a film I've not seen)

It's an interesting movie, but not a patch on Bedazzled (which needs a DVD release urgently, I managed to get my video copy from America as it isn't available at all over here).

I've seen 'Rimmer' a few times on tv. It's a bit odd but worth watching, mainly for the cast of very famous people in it.

It also has a suprising bit of nudity in it which was very unusual for a 'comedy' movie made at that time, Vanessa Howard does a full frontal (if my memory doesn't cheat).

Well, nine months later none of my choices seem close to ariving on DVD...

Here's a few more which deserve the DVD treatment (if PERCY gets it, they should!)

01. The World Ten Times Over
02. The Pumpkin Eater
03. The Deadly Affair
04. Charlie Bubbles
05. The Beauty Jungle
06. No Love For Johnny
07. Our Man In Havana
08. The Damned
09. Sapphire
10. Georgy Girl
11. Spring And Port Wine

No Michael Rimmer but Bedazzled R2 has a release date.

In a case of 'you wait for ages, then two buses turn up', Bedazzled is popping up on BBC1 this week. It's odd how these things turn out, for many years the only Hammer 'Frankenstien' movie I hadn't seen was 'The Revenge', so when it debuted on video I bought it, only for it to start cropping up on tv schedules quite regulary (I think it was also the first of the series to reach R2).

Some of the films I'd like to see out on dvd; some of which I've seen and some I haven't but would be very interested to see:

Unman, Wittering & Zigo
I Start Counting
No Blade of Grass
The Wild Little Bunch aka The 14
Deep End (1970)
Spring and Port Wine
Mumsy, Nanny, Sonny and Girly
Cool It Carol
The Sailor Who Fell From Grace With the Sea (this does have a hard-to-find R1 release, but an R2 one with extras would be nice)
Ghost of a Chance (1968)
The Skull (1965)
It Shouldn't Happen to a Vet
You're Never Too Young To Rock
Walk a Crooked Path
Goodbye Mr. Chips (1969 version with Peter O' Toole and Petula Clarke)

Performance would be a welcome release. The BFI put it on the selected circuit last year and have released an accompanying BFI Classics book but no DVD.

I'm left with a disc I authored myself from foreign tv (with subs).

And why no R2 Night of the Demon?

I forgot about that. The problem with that release is that I spent £20 on the videos of 'The Maggie' and 'Whiskey Galore' a few weeks before the DVD release was annouced. I really didn't want to pay out another £27 just for "Sunday". The other Ealing sets eventually had seperate releases, hopefully we'll see 'Sunday' soon.
