Spot on with this one, but I guess I got it wrong with most of my choices. But I was spot on with Daniel Day-Lewis as the best actor, should have a slight wager on this. This guy is brilliant and I look forward to catching as many of the best films as possible. Looking forward to watching The Counterfeiters very much, but most companies here don't follow the Oscar or media trends. It's more like what sells, Superman, Spiderman, action movies and so on. Shame. But there you go.

Just a small input, I do not care vary much for most of Hollywood's modern film output or ours for that matter, but I did enjoy watching the Oscars on television.
I do find it totally patronizing and annoying that the BBC should send a very expensive expedition to Hollywood to attend this annual festivity of grandeur and mutual admiration and then bore us each morning over last week telling us about it all and 'what we are missing' because they will not show the event any more. ![]() Some of the programming each morning has been trite to the extreme - a parade of dresses worn in past films being one subject - 'but we only have time to show you these two' although that particular broadcast went on for five minutes (TV people can not stop talking nonsense!) but the lead story of the day was given just two minutes! ![]() I would suggest that the total and expensive time spend by the BBC covering these pre-Oscar mornings would have bought the real programme for us to see last evening! But that just might please us stupid license payers and this is not a thought of the BBC. I might add that the same applies to the Skating Gala when the best of skaters would perform fantastic entertainment 'doing their own thing' - this has also been dropped, no-doubt because it found popularity!

I have just posted this elsewhere when it should be here!
I did always enjoy watching the Oscars each year - if only for the giggle of it but now it is dropped. The BBC cannot afford to buy it (?) even so they can afford to send a very expensive excursion of persons over there to send back, over the past week of mornings, the most trite of programing such as five minutes spent showing to us the items of dress apparel from last years films - completely banal. Of cause no stars are visible until last evening but they spend time showing us 'the red carpet'! ![]() The BBC have spent far more time on this pre-Oscar non event than the daily lead stories of greater importance to us the silly license payers. If they had not wasted time and Lord knows how much on this pre-nonsense they could have bought the programme for the showing last evening Too sensible and logical. The same applies to the wonderful annual professional skating Gala event when the skaters performed 'their own routines' this also attracted a good audiencebecause it was great entertainment, obviously not a consideration for the BBC

Without an expensive publicist, no matter how good your film is you're not going to win an Oscar anyway, it's the Hollywood way! |

Having seen the Best Picture No Country For Old Men, hated the ending, I must say Javier Bardem deserved the Best Supporting Male as he was stunning. The French girl that won Best Actress was also quite magnificent as Edith Piaf and fully deserving of her Oscar. The Americans voting for a Frenchie, that is different!
Really looking forward to seeing the Daniel Day Lewis film. Amazing that he is the grandson of the great Michael Balcon. The Oscars are a bit of a pain, but they aren't going to disappear, so it's bit pointless moaning about them. Same as the BAFTAS really, just a big "aren't I fabulous" ego night. Waste of time. |

At the start of the Tyne Tees news bulletin tonight,a choir from Billingham got a mention for their brief part in Atonement. I thought I would have a quick shower and come down to listen to the rest of the item, but I missed it. What I heard briefly, was that the choir got some praise for their role in the film (they were in the Dunkirk scene, singing Forgive Our Foolish Ways). Anyway, the film bagged the Oscar for best music.

Hi Merton,
Did you find watching the film 'No Country For Old Men' a bit of a bleak experience? I have heard that it is a tough movie to sit through. If you are going to see the Daniel Day-Lewis film be prepared to be bored. I have not seen it myself yet but more than a couple of people I know have told me how tedious the storyline is. Cheers Dave. |

I thought that No Country was dreadful. Why are the Yanks so obsessed with violence. It all goes to show that the American film industry has very little idea of taste or culture. No doubt if Ernst Lubitsch were still alive he would be force into making Dumb and Dumber 4 or Rambo 8.

I'm sorry that Julie Christie hasn't won many of these awards. I've favored her performances in many films over all other competitors.
I'd have never given Daniel Day Lewis the award for MY LEFT FOOT, though. I still think Hugh O'Conor as the young Christy Brown deserved it far more. |

Wouldn't it be good if there was a pop star star called Oscar. Then he could win a Brit.
I reckon George C. Scott changed everything by not turning up, all those years ago. The Nominations are probably more important than the winning I would have thought. They hang in the air for months.

I think it's a disgrace that some limey-irish bloke pretends to be an American and then walks off with the top prize. It's about time the American Film Industry stood up for itself and stopped all these foreigners coming in and taking American jobs. It would never happen in Europe or anywhere else, for that matter. Americans should stop being such a soft touch. When was the last time a Yankee won anything at Cannes, huh? 2005! That's when! ..... and that was only because Tommy Lee pretended to be Mexican.........
These people, coming over here, leavin' their carbon footprints on our nice red carpet......... mumble........ mumble....... |
