Thumbs up Fear Is The Key (1974)

Finally got to see FEAR IS THE KEY on Optimum's DVD release, in full 2.35:1 Widescreen, and enjoyed the film immensely! Fantastic cinematography, an amazing car chase and a great plot from Alistair MacLean's novel.

This is the kind of British film that I love watching. Seventies-style. They;re always entertaining, and rarely let you down. Great to see John Vernon play yet another villain.

All in all, very pleased with Optimum's continuing releases of rare British films in their proper aspect ratios.

What do others think of the film?

I have not seen it for a while but from memory I recall it being enjoyable. Where Eagles Dare is probally the most famous Maclean film but there are others that are also good. When eight bells toll is entertaining.

Fear is The Key is an excellent film, both Barry Newman and Suzy Kendall are brilliant. Of course it has the famous car chase scene which is excellent. The music by Roy Budd is fantastic. It is a highly enjoyable film.

Oh I love THE SATAN BUG, too! Richard Baseheart is brilliant in that.

One thing I found quite funny in FEAR IS THE KEY, was seeing Ben Kingsley in his first film - with hair!

Force 10 from Navarone is one of my guilty pleasures with three actors I always find very watchable: Robert Shaw, Edward Fox and Franco Nero.

I enjoy FTFN as well ... in fact I'm sucker for most of the Alister Maclean films/books ... Shaw and Nero are two of my acting heroes so this one is an especially guilty pleasure for me!

Personally I preferred 'When Eight Bells Toll' with Anthony Hopkins. The script was actually adapted by MacLean himself, and while this is certainly not always a good sign, it works very well here and it is clear that he fully understands the requirements of adapting a book to the screen, unlike some writers.

There is a rather good and nicely priced UK DVD released without much flair a couple of years back by Carlton. To anyone who enjoyed 'Fear is the Key' then I would certainly recommend this.

Mondo Esoterica - Cult and obscure DVD reviews from Spaghetti Westerns to Hammer Horror.
