Lionel Jeffries and Alfie Bass conform to the stereotype in "Jumping for joy "
a 1956 film with Frankie Howerd and Stanley Holloway

The betting shop scene in Kes seemed a pretty legitimate operation and the patrons were helpful salt of the earth working class-types. Out of interest. When were betting shops legalised in the UK?

As penfold said above, 1961, and he should know

Wikipedia says "In 1961, Harold Macmillan's Conservative Government legalised betting shops and tough measures were enacted to ensure that bookmakers remained honest."

I'm sure there's one with Sid James as 'Honest Sid' the bookie (probably The Galloping Major). Also George Cole as Flash Harry.

Has anyone mentioned that upstanding member of the community Clarence Fitton in The Belles of St Trinians? It's a long time since I've seen A boy, a girl and a bike but I think that Anthony Newley is in thrall to an evil bookie (probably played by John Blythe as they usually were in the 1940s).

Pre 1961 my dad used to be what was known as a 'bookie's runner'. He had a devise (the clock) which he would place all the bets he received. He was a very popular member of the local community, and I don't remember any dodgy characters calling at our house, although we did have quite a few visits from the local bobby - to place a bet!

Start every day with a smile and get it over with.

We were still using those clocks in the local phone accounts office in the early 90's.
Many people used the 'street-corner' bookie - although greengrocers and barbers seem to have been popular venues for the operations, and most big factories had a designated runner.

Yes, I completely agree - so wooden!

Thank God most of their scenes seem to be with Blanche (fab!).

Wasn't there an evil bookie in Eastenders who sexually harassed Nigel's girlfriend just before she was run over?
