Default Don't think this has been on TV for a while

CITY OF THE DEAD. 1960 78 MINUTES

Plot Synopsis
George Baxt scripted this extraordinarily good chiller from a story by Milton Subotsky, who also co-produced. A college student (Venetia Stevenson) with an interest in witchcraft goes to the Massachusetts town of Whitewood. It's a foggy, spooky town which gets even scarier when Stevenson discovers that the owner of the Raven's Inn, Mrs. Newlis (Patricia Jessel) is in fact a 268-year old witch. Jessel sold her soul to the Devil to regain her life after being burned at the stake. The whole town is her coven, including Stevenson's kindly history professor (Christopher Lee). Stevenson's boyfriend and brother arrive to look for her and discover human sacrifices and all sorts of evil goings-on. One of the few horror films of the period which still has the power to frighten, Horror Hotel (USA title) is required viewing for genre fans.
Editorial Reviews:
The debut of director John Llewellyn Moxey (then billed only as John Moxey) is an atmospheric chiller filmed largely on studio sets with a cast that mixed veteran performers (Patricia Jessel and Christopher Lee) with young stars (the 22-year-old American Venetia Stevenson in the lead). It's a low-budget film that depends, like many of the horror films made for Britain's Hammer Studios, more on atmosphere than dazzling special effects. Released the same year as Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, it shares that film's setup, of a beautiful young woman checking into a hotel that's a front for evil doings. Stevenson's Nan Barlow is an inquisitive college student investigating a New England town which was the scene of witchcraft trials some 250 years before. Stevenson isn't much of an actress, but Moxey gives her enough support and offers a rousing, fiery finale in a graveyard to compensate.

I have recently imported this from the states, the transfer to DVD is excellent. It take me and my wife back to the days when we went regularly to the cinema when we were courting.
Regards Chris B

Is that the one with the 'Ask' and Candace Glendenning in it? If so, it was on BBC1early last year.

You're quite right it wasn't James Bolam ( was getting confused with another Mike Raven effort where he plays a mad artist who kills his models and coats them in liquid gold - these days he'd up for the Turner Prize! ) - it was, I think Derek Fowldes.

Yes, Robin Askwith and Candace Glendenning are in the film. Also, the actor who plays Sam in 'Catweazle' series 1. Name escapes me, but you probably know who I mean. Surprisingly gory film for its time (I thought), but with cheap effects.

That's the one Tod. Definitely shown on the beeb last year, and about 18 months before as well. See, they do show Brit horrors on a rough two year cycle.
Time was when I hadn't seen Tales From The Crypt for about nigh on 20 yrs. Now the beeb repeat it quite often, along with House That Dripped Blood, Doctor Terror's House Of Horror and Asylum. They never show From Beyond The Grave or Torture Garden though. I suppose other channels have the screening rights to those two.

Sorry, I seem to have spilled over from the BHF there...

Mike Raven also pops up in an episode of a long forgotten early 70’s dance/pop show called “2G’s and the Pop People”, spinning a few discs for the tank top wearing young folk then doing his own rendition of The Monster Mash “tell them Michael sent you”

TOWER OF EVIL and the YORGA films are both available on R1 DVD. HAUNTED HOUSE OF HORROR was in the Tigon DVD boxed set. SHUTTERED ROOM appeared on SKY not a very long time ago - late 90s maybe. But nobody has rescreened TALES THAT WITNESS MADNESS since the 80s - that's one film I'd love to get a better copy of...

A lot of folks are mentioning old tv movies which, sadly, are almost never shown on tv anymore.I collect them, especially horrors, thrillers etc..Many are far better than the trash they keep repeating endlessly!..

Just remembered another one I'd like to see again. 'The Shuttered Room' (1967), with Ollie Reed in a supporting role as the leader of a Cornish gang of thugs.

One of the reasons I'd like to see 'Haunted House of Horror' again is because of its cheese factor.
Seen Tower of Evil about 5 times on TV.
The Shuttered Room one only viewing many many years ago
Other horror rarities not seen for over 2 decades
Corruption
Mrs Amworth
and one of my all time faves shown iirc last in 1977/8 Night Monster

I hear the Union Jack still remains.I see Namijira in custody
and I see Truganini's in chains.
