DANGEROUS GAME was on BBC 4 (?) within the last 6-12 months. Again in the last couple of years SKY Cinema had a rash of showing later Hammers, including AD 1972, which has since had a DVD release, thank goodness.

A certain amount of flak has been aimed at Alan Gibson for the latter Draculas, but IMO he made a pretty reasonable go of things - it was incredibly difficult to update Drac at that time; they were just on the cusp of various changes. AD 72 did drag its heels a bit with the belated references to hippy culture, but SATANIC RITES had some interesting underlying themes, with the mysterious 'Establishment' figures on both sides...

Night of the Demon (1957)
Forgive the occasional appearance of the crudely animated demon, the film is very cleverly
directed, and causes unease with reference to the occult.

The Night of the Demon has been on TV twice in the past six months. It is a superb film.

I agree, in fact I think I prefer the last two Hammer/Christopher Lee Draculas than any of the sequels (with the exception of Taste the Blood of Dracula which is fab).

I think Dracula worked better outside of his period, Transylvanian home for Hammer and turning him into a modern-day supervillain a la The Satanic Rites of Dracula (where he masquerades as a property developer!) had some mileage in it.

I would have preferred to see more of this kind of thing and less of The Scars of Dracula!

Yes, some of the 're-treads' were a bit ponderous, but (sadly) by the time they got round to updating the Count the Hammer style was a already generation behind in terms of horror...

I like the two updated Hammer Dracula films and had high hopes for Dracula 2000. However that film was very disappointing. Ultraviolet is a good updating of the vampire legend. What happened to Hammer's new vampire/rave film?

The main problem with both Dracula AD 1972 "The Count is back, with an eye for London's hotpants . . . and a taste for everything"

and The Satanic Rites of Dracula was Christopher Lee was hardly in any of those two and hardly any lines either ,even Lee himself admitted it was rather silly bringing Dracula into the present time.

We should be thankful we did not get the working title for this film which was Dracula Chases the Mini Girls

I watched the DVD of Scars of Dracula recently and the high quality of DVD certainly did the film no favours, showing up some really obvious scenic backcloths in the studio scenes. The bouncing, blood-vomiting bat is always good for a giggle, though.

Lee was (and remains) a Dracula purist, and all praise to him for that, but there are only so many times you can essentially remake the same picture. Perhaps for this we should 'blame' Sir Jim for somewhat milking the Hammer cash cows, but in principal the updates could have worked; things had to move on and get some freshness.

Personally I like the idea of limiting Dracula, to have this shadowy figure looming over the picture (how effective was just that - quite literally - in the opening creds to SATANIC RITES?) with this sense of foreboding writ large. Seen only fleetingly, his menace would be even more effective. Trouble is the quality of the scripts just wasn't there to support them in even simply daring to bring the concept up to date.

Like I said, I love the mixed tones of characters in SATANIC RITES. Shadowy figures (all round) being set in darkness, it had great potential; pity it was never fully realised...

Dracula (1958)
Tales that Witness Madness
The Uncanny
The Frozen Dead
Torture Garden

I wish they'd bring back the Horror Double Bills.
