If only they would give it a proper UK (or even USA) DVD release rather than cropped to 4.3

I'd say 'The Decent' was brilliant. Make sure you see the UK cut, rather than the USA cut which removed its real ending.

Judging from the thread, the prize goes to 'Night of the Demon'... but I haven't seen that since I was a young teen... fond memories but vague... to vague for me to vote for it... however I have heard that it is due a nice UK DVD release (IMDb board) though I haven't been able to confirm this.

I've just purchased the book 'Beating the Devil: The Making of 'Night of the Demon' from Amazon UK here... http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/095319261X/202-7246361-5067008
Its been out on a region 1 DVD for yonks (night of the demon) 70% of the DVDs I buy are region1 from amazon.com, I bought a superb sony multi region DVD player from Richer Sounds for £49.00!! everyone should have one, why wait for a DVD to become available on region 2? some of them never will!!

Yes, I know... but I'd sooner wait for the UK release, even though I have a multi-region player.

I prefer Region 2 because I find the NTSC to PAL flicker somewhat irritating. I will put up with it for movies that have not a PAL version due.

I have never noticed a flicker or anything like that from my region 1 DVDs, is there really a difference? maybe I have to look at them more closley on my big telly! either that or my eyesight is not what it used to be! I would have thought modern DVD technology would eliminate those kind of glitches?

It shows up most when the camera pans.

Basically, as I understand it, the NTSC to PAL conversion flicker is caused by the fact that NTSC runs at 30 frames per second whereas PAL TVs run at 25 fps and therefore a conversion has to take place. (Film runs at 24 fps). Its not a glitch, but a fact of conversion.

As for noticing it. Lots of people do without it being annoying to them. I happen to be Autistic and, like a lot of Autistics (A disorder often associated with sensory sensitivities), I have very sensitive sight and find the 'flicker' or 'stutter' quite uncomfortable.

How big is your big TV? Mine is a 50 incher plasma widescreen - Because I use it mostly for movies, I went for the largest I could afford. Its a beautiful TV (LG, though not a status symbol make, has a great picture quality - I felt better than the Sonys and Panasonics(?) I saw). I only bought it in January. Previously I only had a 32" CRT widescreen TV beast.

My discomfort at the flicker may be partially pedantic... rather like my hate of cropped picture... I want the DVD to play as perfectly as possible... and that flicker is distracting. I only buy NTSC if I have no alternative.

Just a few additions to the great films already mentioned:

"And Now the Screaming Starts" and "Fright" - although I was a lot younger when I first saw them and was impressed by them, I still find that they are sadly neglected in any discussion about horror films or thrillers.

Also, for some reason I like the rather flawed "Ghost Rig". And, yes, I know, I really should raise my standards ;)

In the 80' there used to be a horror film double-bill every Friday? Saturday? night on TV. I would love to have that back. They mainly showed B-movies and below, but it was a unmissable chance to see many, many British productions which never made it onto DVD (or video, back then, or even the late night repeats slot on TV nowadays) and are, to all intents and purposes, lost.

From memory of seeing it as a child, Dr Terrors House of Horrors. More recently Dead Mans Shoes, which I found chilling, although don't know if it constitutes horror.

It would be hard to omit either Night of the Demon or Wicker Man from any best Brit horror film discussion - all three original Quatermass films also for should also qualify ( Quatermass 2 is actually my personal favourite ) plus Night Must Fall, Theatre of Blood, The Dr Phibes Films and Witchfinder General. I have always been very fond of another 17th period horror, Blood on Satan's Claw, my enthusiasm for which has absolutely nothing at all to do with Linda Hayden's nude scenes.

These have always been my favourites:

From Beyond the Grave.
Night of the Demon.
Blood on Satan's Claw.
Dead of Night.
Theatre of Blood.
The Plague of the Zombies.
The Devil Rides Out.
The Wicker Man (1973) ...not that awful 2006 version !!
Vault of Horror
The Vampire Lovers, ....but that's probably just down to Madeline Smith
