Hmmm... I'm still impatiently waiting for my copy of 'Blood on Satan's Claw' to be delivered

HMV let me down... so I went over to PlayDotCom for it.

I liked The Vampire Lovers, too! It's based on one of my favourite vampire stories (Lefanu's Carmilla). Ingrid and Kate were gorgeous, too.

Default Dead of Night more than just the dummy

Dead of Night has many other memorable and truly scary moments aside from the often cited ventriloquist dummy episode with Michael Redgrave. The hairs on the back of my neck still go up at the very thought of the "different room reflected behind you in the mirror" sequence, and the "room for one more on top" line is wonderful. I saw it on late night tv when I was about fifteen and it made the most tremendous impression on me. By a country mile the scariest film I've ever seen.

'Cursed Mirror' is my favourite segment from "Dead of Night".

Does the definition of "Best" give any points to an earlier film for achieving its effectiveness longer? Or a newer film for using its more modern resources?

How does a film's aging affect you? Will your favorite be based on your age when you first saw it, and it's ability to maintain its effect on you?

I think "The Innocents" with Deborah Kerr was a genuinely frightening movie. There is one scene where a ghost of a woman appears on the far side of a lake. It's just a quick glimpse, but I think it's the most effective example of an idea that is almost never done well. It's very subtle, but convincing.

Maybe that doesn't fit the decription of a horror movie?

Also, "Dead of Night". The sequence with the dummy is well-known. For me, the scene with Sally Ann Howes is much more frightening.

It is ... but have you see the 1940s Lon Chaney Jr version .... Weird Woman is the title and it's part of the Inner Sanctum series. Not as good as NOTE but well worth a look.
