Maybe that doesn't fit the decription of a horror movie?

Also, "Dead of Night". The sequence with the dummy is well-known. For me, the scene with Sally Ann Howes is much more frightening.
I would consider The Innocents a 'horror' film .... it scared the doodah out of me when I first watched it as a teenager. The mirror segment is IMHO the scariest section of Dead of Night. It still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.

You're right about that. Mirrors are so often featured in horror films, but they are almost never frightening. But in this film, the use of the mirror really works. The entire film is so subtle and underplayed. From what I recall, there is little use of background music in the film. Even the silence contributes to the impact.

And how come is it that in the Mummy movies, the Mummy is very slow and lumbering but still always catches up with everyone who runs away from it?
And not just the girl who always falls down and/or breaks her heel

Some excellent titles named, but a little known Brit horror, played a little tongue in cheek, but a great ending, is House of the Long Shadows starring the Masters of Horror, Cushing, Price, Lee and Carradine (okay he is an American but I did not pick the cast). Julie Peasbody adds to the glamour and Desi Arnaz is there for some strange reason, the male lead I think and the excellent Richard Todd shows up now and again. A good little scary one for those late nights. Must watch it again.

The Innocents was in H.M.V last week for £10 in Northern Ireland, so im sure it will be the same every where. There are some good titles on offer at the minute in H.M.V.

For psychological chills, I think The Queen of Spades is very effective. A superb performance by Adolf Wohlbrück/Anton Walbrook, who had previously been so great in the 1930s German chiller, Der Student von Prag. You know it's all in Hermann's mind, but

Default British Horror? Or not?

I remember years ago enjoying the series of gothic horror movies by Roger Corman. I had always thought that these were American, but I see that The Masque of the Red Death is listed by Britmovie. Wikipedia's list of British films also includes The Tomb of Ligeia. Is there any justification for pretending that the others are British so that I might have an excuse for buying them?

Parts of The Tomb of Ligeia were filmed at Castle Acre in Norfolk.
