Default Horse racing movies

Was watching the racing on Saturday and it occurred to me how few British movies there have been on the subject, let alone good ones - Champions being an honorable exception and even that isn't really in the Seabiscuit league, fond though I am of it. Strange really, considering both its popularity and how visually dramatic the sport is.

Newcastle in Get Carter, Kempton (I think) in Tread Softly Stranger, also sure Stanley Baker visits on in The Criminal.

Squibs Wins The Calcutta Sweep, The Return of The Rat, Gone To Earth, The Clairvoyant, all have fine racing sequences...and the first British Technicolor feature, Wings of the Morning is chock full of location shooting at Derby Day.....

One or two outsiders. The Calendar 1948, I think there's some racing scenes in it (I haven't seen the 1931 version) and Grand National Night, I'm ptetty sure there's no racing scenes. A good title though!!

There was a robbery at a racecourse in The Criminal with Stanley Baker and there was a film called The Oracle, I think made by Ealing.

Dry Rot and The Belles of St Trinians both had a racing theme.

Not British but 'A Day At The Races' starring the Marx Brothers has a horse racing theme.
The scene where Groucho tries to buy a racing tip from the Tutti Fruity man always makes me laugh.

Dave.

Although it was filmed and set in Australia, The Sundowners (1960) is reckoned to be a British film by many standards. There's a big horse racing scene in that

Yes, it was something like that. They (or Bob Mitchum anyway) had gambled all their money on a race. If he won then they could settle down like Deborah Kerr wanted. If it lost then they'd be on the road for the rest of their lives - which in Bob Mitchum's case might not be all that long because Deborah really did want to settle down

Great film, great cast. As well as Bob & Deborah it also has Glynis Johns & Peter Ustinov and lots of Aussies like Chips Rafferty & John Meillon
