I don't think that there was ever a film that scared me as much as the original THE HAUNTING. As terrifying as I found it, except for the thing with the door, you never saw anything. It was all in your mind. Great work by Robert Wise.

I always say that if I were to go back to my hometown cinema and look at the seat I sat in, I'd find my fingerprints still embedded in the underside of the arms after all these years. That's how tight I was holding on.

BTW. Hate to argue.... ..... but the Legend of Hill House was nothing like The Haunting, other than that it took place in an old house. It's got Michael Gough's voice in it, so that's worth the effort I suppose......

PS. I don't think Patrick McGoohan plays golf..... Maybe someone knows different.
Moor, just got around to looking at this thread again, The Haunting is available at £2.99 delivered at Play .com. Anyway, The Legend of Hell House & The Haunting are very similar in my view, I guess we will have to disagree.

Oh No They're Not!!
They are plotted after a similar fashion but the Legend film is a do it by numbers pretence of science in pursuit of ghosties, all mixed in with cod psychology...

The difference between The Legend of Hell House & The Haunting is pretty simple.......

The Haunting never had a stuffed cat in the film whereas Legend of Hell House did.

Apart from the 1947 BBC version I don't know of any other remakes.

There's a 1959 French TV remake/adaptation and a 1977 German one and a 1957 BBC Sunday Night Theatre production

None of them can be anywhere near as good as the 1940 film though

BTW there was also a 1939 BBC production

Thanks Steve. I would be interested in seeing the French and German interpretations of such an English play. Presumably the German one is the only one in colour.

The bit where the bedroom door moves to form screaming faces and moves in and out as if breathing, is still an all time favourite horror film scene. Absolutely inspired.

Right, I did the Haunting last night, indeed very very good. The Legend of Hell House tonight, looking forward to seeing it again and comparing the 2 films.
