and the element of the jail-boss running things from 'inside' just rang so true to life (even though of course, it took the advent of the mobile phone to make this actually even remotely plausible)

it was in the tradition of 'the league of gentlemen' which also has some quite stunningly awful acting in it.

so count this as +1 "shouting down" because I think this one is not a worst-of-all-time player!

George, like Bats, I do not understand who acted awfully in the League of Gentlemen. There was not a single weakness in that film, Brilliant Film, sublime acting, superb script, masterful direction

That was the best part! Along with Nigel Green having a snog in a lorry...

I don't recall that snog .... that's a good excuse to watch the film again!

Gasp! You don't like The League of Gentlemen? I didn't know this was possible. Amazing! There's only one flaw in TLOG and that's them not being allowed to get away with it. Otherwise it's a near perfect film with the only piece of slightly sub-par acting, IMO, being Nanette's rather unconvincing vamping but she's only in one scene.

I've only seen it once. I knew Ollie was in it but Nigel was a pleasant surprise!

Saying that I think Ollie did the camp thing better in Funny Bones

The acting was stunning alright - stunningly old-fashioned

Them not getting away with it is part of the charm and what makes it a 'must see again' film.

don't get me wrong: I love this film, and its clearly genetic because my son watched it avidly from the age of about 10 onwards.

I love this film. But .. its .. so .. WOODEN. Jack Hawkins is like a block of unexpressive lead.

Hawkins: I see I am going have to keep an eye on you. (He raises an eyebrow)

Jack was playing an embittered ex servicemen and he did it superbly, sorry but there are no wooden performances in this clasic

So many sacred cows, so much senseless slaughter! I find it hard to believe that there are people out there who can't enjoy Brief Encounter, Withnail or Chariots of Fire. I'll give you Clockwork Orange, because that's a definite contender. Oh, and the secret with 4 Weddings is to hit fast forward every time Andy Macdowell appears on screen. (NB: this is a lesson that can be applied to life in general.)

However, I'd like to nominate The Full Monty. Did a roaring trade both at home and abroad, got nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars (fwiw) but is utterly by-the-numbers and just not very amusing, moving, dramatic, unusual or interesting. In my honest yet humble opinion.

I thought Bried Encounter was dull and so where the stars in it, far too old and fuddy to have an affair and the voices so high faluting.
