Default Hugh Grant is a

totally limited actor, and I am baffled why he has actually made it big.
He may look good to some, but he acts the same, don't you agree with me.

He's not the first actor to base his career on one particular act but he does it very well (and he's quite open his laziness in his film roles). But I think he's a better actor than people give him credit for - he gave an excellent performance in An Awfully Big Adventure

CaptainWagget

Just so. An actor who can only do one character can be valid if they do it well. Some people can't even play themselves with any conviction. IMHO Grant was effective in 'Bitter Moon' and 'Sirens'.

A film star who has limitations as an actor? Heavens, whatever next?

Much like Arnold Schwarzenegger (another somewhat limited actor who didn't do too badly) Hugh Grant has always struck me as someone who's well aware of his strengths and weaknesses and has exploited them very cannily.

Leave him and his can of baked beans alone. I could watch Four Weddings and a Funeral until the cows come home. Notting Hill makes me squirm but I watch it every time its on TV. I'd sooner have him than not have him.

I totally agree mrs tiswas, he basically just plays himself, a 'Hooray Henry' prat, he's not a particulary nice person in 'real life' also from what I've read......I cannot abide Jim Carrey either!

Plenty of actors aren't very nice in real life - Rex Harrison leaps to mind as someone generally regarded as a loathesome person with a fairly limited acting range. Doesn't mean that he didn't give many highly enjoyable performances though. Not sure why a limted range matters though - it's not as if Mr Grant is ever likely to inflict his King Lear on us.

I'm with you on Jim Carrey though...

Plenty of middle-class Londoners who've been to private school and Oxbridge sound exactly like Hugh. It sounds perfectly normal to me - no reason to believe it's not his natural one.
