Plus, how many British films have a heroine named after Lenin? A two-dvd restored boxset is much overdue.

Unless we can persuade Thelma and that bloke she works with to sponsor it I don't think there's much chance of seeing it on DVD. But I never give up hope

Gasp! So you're saying it wouldn't be a bestseller then? Who wouldn't want to see dancing charladies, comedy Bolshies and a heroic Sarf London plumber?

Not to mention his dear old Mum putting on a Cockerney accent and coming out with sayings the likes of which won't be heard until Dick van Dyke tries it.

And a glamorous film star, and her sleazy agent, and a butler who gets sloshed, and that strange autogyro plane at the end.

It's a film with something for everyone

I'll have another word with the dear lady next time I see her

Bugsy Malone is another great favourite of mine and Paul Williams's songs are superb.

OLIVER
SCROOGE (1970 - Albert Finney)
HALF A SIXPENCE
OH WHAT A LOVELY WAR
TOPSY TURVY (docudrama musical?)

and in the "Pop" vein:

A HARD DAY'S NIGHT
HELP
FERRY ACROSS THE MERSEY
SUMMER HOLIDAY
EVERY DAY'S A HOLIDAY
POP GEAR (maybe a documentary)

Anyway, those are my picks.

Surely the Commitments which, apart from a superb original soundtrack, has the most realistic inside view of a band I've ever seen. How many other musicians out there have witnessed those classic behind the scenes rows - especially when there are lady singers to contend with? And the auditions,
"What do you play?"
"Play? Nothing, I saw a queue and thought someone was selling drugs"
Priceless.
Regards,
HG

But was The Commitments a musical? Or just a film with a lot of music in it?

Now Absolute Beginners, that was a musical.
But I'd also give a vote to Bugsy Malone, that was great

Not so much a musical as a drama with musical dream sequences, The Steamie is a stunner.

And for pushing boundaries and commenting on our times, Jerry Springer the Opera.
