'Oliver', without a doubt: "Nobody's la-di-da or uppity, there's a cuppa tea for all . . . "

Hard to see anything beating Oliver! but Tommy is a close contender.

And if Ken Russell had directed Jesus Christ Superstar rather than Norman Jewison...

The Wicker Man is also worth a mention although it isn't often classified as such.

A couple of numbers doesn't make it a musical, does it?

What about Tommy Steele?

`Oh what a lovely war` is great but its one of those that I cant watch sometimes, like Blackadder goes forth, genius, but the subject matter makes me as mad as hell.

Mary Poppins is great but just how British is it ? Filmed totally in Warners, Burbank Studios.

I was never taken in by Dick van Dyke and his "cockaneee" accent. LOL.

To his credit he did recently say that he had to work so hard on the dance routines that he just didn't have time to get his accent anywhere near.

I think "Half a Sixpence" was a pretty good effort.

"Gawd bless ya Moory Poppinnnsssss"

I know what you mean, but I watched it a few weeks ago and was entranced by it again. One of the most moving and subversive films I've seen. All those authority type actors we're used to seeing in stiff upper lip war movies... Vanessa as one of the Pankhursts... So committed. It's stood up really well and seems fresh with the current war in our minds.

Possibly my favourite Attenborough direction. But then there's Ghandi and A Bridge Too Far...

Well certainly his best musical. (Never got on with A Chorus Line)

British book and most of the cast. It is Disney, of course... But if we open that old can of chestnuts again...

Are we allowed Distant Voices, Still Lives? They hardly ever seem to stop singing in that.

Hmm, now you ask the question, I'm struck by how few truly great British musicals there are.
