Listening to Parky's Sunday Supplement he mentioned this article. Haven't been able to find anything else on it.
Let's hope some of the 'Big Screen' theatres show them.

Regarded by many as the finest ever film director, Sir David Lean won a total of 28 Oscars with 16 productions. Now, to mark the centenary of his birth, his entire back catalogue is to be released in cinemas in their original format.

Kevin Brownlow, the film-maker who wrote a biography of the director, who died in 1991, said: "These are some of the best films made in this country and there is no doubt that they are going to find an audience."

The BFI has received funding from the David Lean Foundation to restore the director's seven black and white films and his first two colour movies. The intention is to produce digital copies that can be shown in cinemas across Britain.

Alongside the release of the films next year in Britain and the United States, a series of events, including screenings at the Cannes Film Festival, are planned.

Here's hoping for the big screen

He actually won just two of them, as Best Director for The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) and for Lawrence of Arabia (1962).

If a film that he directed won a Best Picture Oscar then that goes to the Producer. Are they counting all the other Oscars won on films he directed as being "his" Oscars? I think that's taking auteur theory to the point of absurdity

I was running an MS SQL query and, when I ran it against MySQL, I got the much higher figure. Both numbers represent substantial numbers, and I'm still not sure how a proclamation like "over rated" should be valued. #1? #3? #10? #100? #1000? All of those seem comparatively high when viewed in the context of film-history.

Before you can say he's over rated you have to figure out how he's rated.
Then you can try to determine if he's actually worth that rating

But it sounds like it involves a lot of unquantifiable valuations

I've only seen a few of these so far - I especially liked Great Expectations can anyone advise my next good watch?

You could watch 'The Bounty' and imagine how great a film it would have been under Lean's direction.

And what's all this about me having me leg off?

I think The Bounty is good as it is, with the exception of Gibson's woeful performance as Christian.

The 1962 version, for all it's faults, is still a rousing spectacular adventure. I don't think even Lean could have have topped it at that late stage in his life.

Now if he'd been let loose on the story in 1962, that would have been something. Shame that he was off in the desert piddling about with camels.
